Baseball Drops Nonleaguer to Milwaukee

Verburg, Krzciok homer for second consecutive game in 9-6 loss
The Chippewas (13-19) entertain Youngstown State in another nonleaguer on Wednesday (3 p.m.) and then return to Mid-American Conference play when they welcome Ohio for a three-game series this weekend.
Milwaukee (9-24) broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the fourth inning. The Panthers used three walks to load the bases and then Dominic Kibler hit a two-out grand slam to break the deadlock. Dylan O'Connell followed with a homer to make it 7-2.
"I really had one note on my notebook for today, and that's the free passes," CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "If we cut those in half, it's probably a one-run game or we're tied going into the late innings.
"Just too much traffic on the bases. When you're playing in midweeks, usually you're trying to get guys in the game to try to get them going a little bit. And those guys just struggled a little bit with pounding the zone and making Milwaukee beat us. (Milwaukee) did a good job. They were patient. They were disciplined. We know we've got to be a little bit better than that."
Mitch Tarnowski (0-1), who came on to pitch the fourth inning, walked the only two batters he faced and took the loss.
Liam Stumpf made his first career start for the Chippewas, and Carter Campau, Kenny Keller, Jared Hanson and Cameron Niehaus also pitched in relief.
Brady Krzciok and Spencer Verburg each hit a solo homer for CMU. Both homered for the second consecutive game. It was Krzciok's eighth of the season and Verburg's third.
Joey Milto had an RBI triple and singled and Verburg finished with two hits to lead CMU's nine-hit attack.
The Chippewas pounded out 22 hits in scoring 21 runs in a MAC win at Bowling Green on Sunday. Both totals were season highs.
"I thought the guys picked up from where they left off this weekend," Sabol said. "We had a lot of hard balls in play (against Milwaukee). A lot of them resulted in outs, some lineouts, some tough ones there. When things are going well, those ones drop.
"I thought the energy level was pretty good, but maybe not exactly where we want it to be. Midweeks, there's so much value to gain from playing these games. Obviously, we don't get a chance to play at home all that much, so that's a big part of it. But also we get some guys in there and hopefully get them going to help us down the stretch."
