Volleyball Battles, Drops Two Saturday Matches

Central Michigan Volleyball drops matches to Auburn and UIC on Saturday to close its trip to Chicago.
CHICAGO – Central Michigan Volleyball finished Saturday at the DePaul/UIC Invitational with back-to-back 0-3 losses to Auburn and UIC. The Chippewas lost 19-25, 19-25 and 11-25 against the Tigers and 17-25, 21-25 and 20-25 against the Flames.
How it happened
In the first set, CMU fell 19-25, putting up a strong fight against the Tigers. At the 9-16 mark, the Chippewas posted a 4-0 run bring the contest within four at 12-6. Another 3-0 run later in the set brought CMU within three points at 17-20.
In the second set, CMU trailed 2-7, but rallied back to within three to bring the score to 7-10. Auburn peeled off a 5-0 run to take a 10-18 lead, but CMU had fight left in them. The Chippewas went on a 4-1 run and made it 17-23, fought off two set points, before ultimately falling to the Tigers 19-25 in a second straight set.
Through two sets, Cripe led the offense once again for CMU with nine kills. Alexis Carper had the lone ace for the Chippewas at the line.
The third set was tied at three before a 6-1 run for the Tigers brought CMU down by five. Auburn then called a timeout with the Tigers leading 5-9. CMU fell victim to a 3-0 run for Auburn trailing by five, 8-13. At the media timeout, CMU trailed 8-15. Auburn continued on a 6-0 scoring run to build a 10-23 lead before the Tigers took the third set 25-11.
In the second match of the day, CMU took on the UIC Flames. The Flames opened with a 2-6 lead early in the first set, but Taylor Cripe and Alexis Carper tallied back-to-back kills to force UIC into a timeout 11-15. The Flames came out of the timeout and charted a service ace to get CMU within three. Central Michigan fell in the first set 17-25 to the Flames.
The Chippewas held a five-point advantage in the second set, 9-5, but were forced into a timeout with a two-point lead, 8-10. With a lead of just one, CMU called a timeout, 14-13, but UIC rallied to take a 16-15 lead. UIC then went up 22-20 after building a five-point lead at 17-22 and eventually took the the second set, 21-25.
In the third set, UIC built a 9-4 advantage. CMU faced match point at 20-24, but the Flames won the match with a kill.
Next up, the Chippewas head to Miami, Fla. to participate in the 305 Invitational hosted by Florida International. That tournament is set to start against the host Panthers at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 18.
