Cohnes Records Career High as a Chippewa in 305 Classic for Volleyball

The Chippewa Volleyball team fell in two matches on the first day in Miami at the 305 Classic highlighted by a career high in kills as a Chippewa from Jaliyah Cohnes in the nightcap.
MIAMI, Fla. – Central Michigan Volleyball moves to 0-12 after dropping the first two matches at the 305 Classic hosted by FIU.
In the first match, the Chippewas lost 0-3 to the host Panthers, 9-25, 21-25 and 14-25. Taylor Cripe charted eight kills and Brenna Storz hit .500 with four.
For the second match of the day, CMU took on the Jacksonville Dolphins. CMU won the first set of the match, the second time the team has won a set this season but fell in the next three; 25-20, 14-25, 19-25, 15-25.
Throughout the day, the Chippewas were offensively led by Cripe on the outside with 17 kills, but Lilly Mullholand added eight herself, hitting .368 across the two matches. Brytn Lyon totaled 49 assists, and Audrey Hackney had two aces for CMU.
On the defensive side, Storz and Lyon each totaled seven blocks, and the Chippewas recorded 11 as a team. Cripe led the team in digs with 13.
How it happened
Central Michigan got its first point of the afternoon via kill from Cripe.
Head Coach Arielle Wilson called a timeout trialing 2-9 to the panthers early in the first set.
The Panthers started to pull away with an eight-point edge at the media timeout; 7-15.
CMU dropped the first set 9-25 to the Panthers.
In the second set, the Chippewas found a little bit of a groove. The two teams went back and forth in the set to start tied at scored five through 12 at various points.
The Panthers forced a timeout with a 15-12 lead as Coach Wilson gathered her team and the Chippewas rallied to tie it once again at 16. The Chippewas trailed by three when FIU reached 20, and the Maroon & Gold ultimately dropped the second set 21-25, showing grit and fight in the match.
To start the third set, CMU took the lead at 2-1 after Coach Wilson challenged and got the call reversed after it was originally given to FIU.
Brytn Lyon and Brenna Storz combined for back-to-back blocks to get CMU within one at 6-7.
Coach Wilson called a timeout trailing 6-10 to the Panthers.
At the media timeout, the Chippewas trailed 7-15 after three aces in a row from a Panther at the service line.
CMU dropped the final set of the match 14-25.
In the first match, the Chippewas were led offensively by Storz who notched four kills (.500). Cripe led the team with eight total kills. Lyon tallied 18 total assists, and Audrey Hackney had the lone ace for the Chippewas. Lyon and Storz also each totaled three block assists.
Central Michigan took on Jacksonville for the second game of the day. The two teams battled hard in the first set with no team having a larger lead than two until Jacksonville pulled away to a four-point lead, causing a timeout from Coach Wilson; 9-13.
Out of the timeout, Lilly Mullholand charted a solo block to give life to the Chippewa side of the court and CMU worked back to tie the set at 14.
Taylor Cripe charted a kill from the backrow, Brenna Storz cleaned one up at the net and Audrey Hackney aced the Dolphins, and CMU found itself leading, forcing a JU timeout; 18-15.
The Chippewas led by five at 19-15 late in the first set and worked to a 22-18 lead forcing JU to take its second timeout of the set.
Taylor Cripe ended the first set for the Chippewas as they walked away with a 25-20 victory to open the match.

Jacksonville went on and grabbed a three-point lead, 10-7, before Coach Wilson took a timeout to recenter her team.
A side out for Central Michigan ended a six-point run for the Dolphins sending Lyon to the line, 8-12.

The Chippewas dropped set two, 14-25.
In set three, CMU jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the Dolphins, but the set got tied at 10 before the Chippewas called a timeout.
Jacksonville led at the media timeout, 15-14.
The Chippewas worked back to tie the set at 18 with a kill from Brenna Storz.
The third set went to the Dolphins, 19-25.
In the third set, CMU rebounded from hitting -0.031 in the second to hitting .261 in the third.
Central Michigan found itself trailing 6-2, the Dolphins took a five-point scoring run into the media timeout, leaving CMU trailing 8-15.
The Dolphins went on a 9-0 run to reach a 19-8 lead over CMU.
The Chippewas faced match point at 13-24, rattled off two points before dropping set three, 15-25.
CMU will take on Alabama A&M on Saturday at 11 a.m. to close out the 305 Classic.
