Chippewa Volleyball team falls to Eastern Michigan in the conference opener, Taylor Cripe leads Chippewas with eighth double-digit kill match of the season.

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan Volleyball team fell to Eastern Michigan in its first MAC match on Tuesday evening in McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas were led by sophomore outside hitter, Taylor Cripe, who tallied 13 kills, her eighth double-digit match this season. Karla Sanchez-George recorded seven kills on the right side for CMU and hit .333. Freshman Alexis Carper led the defense with 10 digs, and Brenna Storz tallied two aces.

The Chippewas move to 0-14 on the season and 0-1 in the conference as Eastern Michigan advances to 7-6 and a 1-0 record in MAC play.

How it happened
Storz recorded the first points of the Mid-American Conference season for CMU, and her first MAC point in her freshman season to get the Chippewas on the board, 1-3 against the Eagles.

EMU aced the Chippewas back-to-back and forced CMU Head Coach Arielle Wilson into a timeout early in the set, 2-6, Eastern Michigan.

The Chippewas then battled to bring the set to within one point at 9-10 with a kill from Carper and an attack error by an Eagle. Brytn Lyon then tied the set for the Chippewas at 12-12 with a service ace. Cripe recorded her second kill of the night and gave CMU a lead at 14-13. Sanchez-George sent the teams to the media timeout with a kill, CMU leading 15-14.

With Brenna Storz at the service line, the Chippewas went on a run. The run started with an ace from the freshman. Her second ace in four points force the Eagles into a timeout, 18-14 Chippewas.

Eastern Michigan went on a run of its own to eventually to retake the lead, but Jaliyah Cohnes answered back for CMU to tie it at 19-19.

Central Michigan gave up an 11-2 run to close out the first set, with Eastern ultimately winning it 25-20. In the first set, CMU charted five aces, compared to the just three by the Eagles.

To start the second set, the Chippewas worked back from a deficit to come within four at the media timeout, trailing 11-15. Out of the media timeout, CMU got a point via service error from the Eagles. CMU dropped set two 14-25 to the Eagles.

The third set started with a back-and-forth battle, CMU coming within two at the 4-6 mark early on. The Eagles took an 11-5 lead and the Chippewas trailed 7-15 at the media timeout. CMU battled back to within six points at 13-19, but Eastern Michigan reached match point after a Chippewa kill was overturned via review.

CMU ultimately dropped the set 15-25 and the match 0-3.

Central Michigan returns to McGuirk Arena on Saturday, Sept. 26 to take on Ohio. That match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
