Tony Jandron has served as an assistant coach on Jordan Bischel’s Central Michigan baseball staff since Bischel took over the program in June, 2018.
Jandron has played a major role in helping lead CMU to four Mid-American Conference championships -- two regular season and two tournament -- and three NCAA Tournament berths in that span.
Over the past four seasons, the Chippewas have amassed a 143-57 won-loss record for a .715 win percentage that ranks fifth in the nation behind only Vanderbilt, Tennessee, UC Santa Barbara and Arkansas.
In 2022, the Chippewas finished 43-19 including 30-7 and in second place in the MAC. They made an impressive run to the league tournament crown, starting 1-1 and then winning three consecutive elimination games, the final two against host and regular season champion Ball State.
Jandron helped the Chippewas to a 47-14 mark in 2019, an 11-6 finish during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and a 42-18 ledger in 2021.
The 47-14 mark (.770 win percentage) in ’19 was the fifth best in the nation and the victory total tied the 1988 team for the most in program history. Included in the win total was a monumental 19-game win streak.
With Jandron on the coaching staff, the Chippewas have compiled an 83-21 MAC record and have posted three consecutive 40-win full seasons for the first time since 1986-88. They won a combined 132 games in 2019, ’21 and ’22, marking the winningest three-year stretch in program history.
CMU is a combined 25-4 against the five other Michigan Division I programs, Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Oakland, since 2019.
In that span, the Chippewas have posted 10 victories over opponents from Power 5 conferences: Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Arizona, Notre Dame, West Virginia and Pitt.
Jandron previously served under Bischel for three years at NCAA Division II Northwood University, where they, along with current CMU assistant Kyle Schroeder, combined to lead the program to unprecedented success, capped by back-to-back Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2017-18.
Eleven times during Jandron’s time on Bischel’s staffs at CMU and at Northwood has a student-athlete gone on to affiliated professional baseball, including Chippewas Andrew Taylor (Astros), Jakob Marsee (Padres), Mario Camilletti (White Sox), Zach Kohn (Yankees), Zavier Warren (Brewers), Griffin Lockwood-Powell (Dodgers), and Ian Leatherman (Rays).
Jandron coached infielders, hitters and pitchers and helped the Timberwolves to a combined two-year total of 84 victories in ’17-18, the fifth-highest total in Division II. Both squads were ranked in the top 20 nationally.
Jandron began his coaching career at College of DuPage, a junior college in Glen Ellyn, Ill. and then joined Bischel at Northwood in 2016. At DuPage, Jandron helped lead a 16-win improvement as the Chaparrals finished 39-20 in 2015, their first winning season in five years.
The versatile Jandron, who in college played every position but catcher, was a standout at St. Norbert in De Pere, Wis., the same school that produced Bischel. Jandron was an NCAA Division III All-American in 2010 when he led the division with a .511 batting average.
Jandron helped lead the Green Knights to four consecutive Midwest Conference championships from 2007-10, was a four-time all-conference player, and earned player of the year honors in both the NCAA Central Region and the Midwest Conference in his senior year. He remains St. Norbert’s all-time leader with 22 career wins and was also an all-conference basketball player as a point guard at the school.
Jandron, a native of Negaunee in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Norbert in 2011 and a master’s in organization leadership from Northwood in 2019.
