A 1989 graduate of Dower College of Education in South Africa, Marais brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach to the Chippewas.

Marais was a teacher in South Africa from 1990-2001 before teaching at East Union Middle School in Marshville, N.C., a position he held when hired at CMU.
He played field hockey for four years at Paterson High in South Africa, graduating in 1984. Earl then played club field hockey from 1985-2000. During his time as a player for the Alpha Men[apos]s Hockey Club it won two national championships and eight conference titles.
Earl and his wife, Debbie, live in Mount Pleasant and have two children - Robyn (23) and Dean (19).
