Earl Marais joins the Central Michigan University field hockey program for his 11th season as an assistant coach.

A 1989 graduate of Dower College of Education in South Africa, Marais brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach to the Chippewas.

Marais has coached field hockey for the past 25 years and competed for 19 seasons. He began his coaching career in 1990, working through 2003 with various age groups in South Africa -- both male and female.

Marais was a teacher in South Africa from 1990-2001 before teaching at East Union Middle School in Marshville, N.C., a position he held when hired at CMU.

He played field hockey for four years at Paterson High in South Africa, graduating in 1984. Earl then played club field hockey from 1985-2000. During his time as a player for the Alpha Men[apos]s Hockey Club it won two national championships and eight conference titles.

Earl and his wife, Debbie, live in Mount Pleasant and have two children - Robyn (23) and Dean (19).
