Jennifer Johnstone was named Central Michigan’s head field hockey coach in February 2022.
In 2024, Johnstone coached forward Mallory Camryn to National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Second Team All-Region honors, the first honoree for CMU since 2012. Camryn, who led CMU with 10 goals and 4 assists for a total of 24 points, earned First-Team All-MAC honors. Johnstone additionally saw Carolena Ryon to the MAC All-Freshman team.
Johnstone, a former CMU assistant coach, previously served on the coaching staff at Michigan State for five seasons.
Prior to MSU, Johnstone guided Husson University to the 2011 North Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship and an NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Her 2012 Husson squad won the NAC regular season title. At Husson, Johnstone coached 11 All-NAC selections and was named the 2012 NAC coach of the year.
Before arriving at Husson, Johnstone coached at Frostburg State in Maryland and Kenyon College in Ohio. She also served as assistant coach at Ohio Wesleyan and helped the 2007 squad to its best finish in eight years.
Johnstone started her collegiate coaching career in the Ivy League, serving as an assistant coach at both Brown and Cornell.
Johnstone has held a variety of coaching positions at the amateur level, highlighted by her time with the U.S. field hockey team at the 2017 and 2018 AAU Junior Olympic Games. She has also served USA Field Hockey regional futures manager and as a coach at Michigan’s Level 1 north futures training site. She has been involved with coaching high performance and has served as a selector at USA Field Hockey’s National Futures Tournament.
She holds Level 3 accreditation through US Field Hockey, has served as a selector at Nexus Events both regionally and nationally for 10 Years, and has worked summer camps at Northwestern University for the past seven years.
Johnstone was a standout student-athlete at Maine, earning National Field Hockey Coaches Association Regional All-America recognition three times and was twice named to the All-America East First Team. She was a four-time letter winner, leading the Black Bears in scoring twice.
Johnstone earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in mathematics from Maine. She earned her master’s degree in administration from CMU in 2018.
