Chris Davis rejoined coach Keno Davis' Central Michigan staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2018-19 season.
In 2019-20, Chris Davis was part of a staff that led a Chippewa squad that averaged 78.3 points per game, ranking first in the MAC and 21st nationally. CMU posted back-to-back 100-point games – 134 in their season opener and then 102 in their second game of the season – marking the first time a CMU men’s basketball team has scored in triple digits in consecutive games since the 1972-73 season.
The 134 points, which came against Mississippi Valley State, is a program record.
In addition, CMU senior David DiLeo became the Mid-American Conference career leader in 3-pointers with 337 and the Chippewas extended their series win streak over archrival Western Michigan to six games.
In 2018-19, Davis helped the Chippewas post a 23-12 record, tying for the program’s second-highest single-season win total, and to a second place-finish in the MAC West and a second-consecutive postseason appearance.
Davis served as the Chippewas’ video coordinator in 2016-17 when guard Marcus Keene led the nation in scoring and broke the MAC record for single-season scoring, as the Chippewas finished third in the nation in scoring (88.3 ppg).
Davis spent the 2017-18 season as an assistant at the Air Force Academy. The Falcons claimed victories over third-place New Mexico and tournament semifinalist Utah State that year. In the win over the Lobos, Air Force set a record for most points in a conference game (100).
Overall, Davis boasts a resumé that includes three decades of coaching experience, beginning at Western Michigan in 1986-87, when he served as a graduate assistant.
He has also worked as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State, Kent State, Western Michigan, Drake, Providence and UC Davis.
From 1987-89, he was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Grand Valley State. In two seasons, he helped lead the Lakers to a 40-18 mark and two second-place finishes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Davis coached at Western Michigan as an assistant from 1995-2000, helping the Broncos to a 21-8 record, a Mid-American Conference West Division title and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 1998.
Davis spent eight years on the coaching staff at Drake University, including five seasons with Keno Davis. He joined the Drake coaching staff in 2000 and remained on the staff when Keno arrived at Drake as an assistant under his father, Dr. Tom Davis, in 2003. In the spring of 2007, Davis was promoted to associate head coach.
While at Drake, Davis established himself as one of the most respected recruiters in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was instrumental in bringing in many of the members of the 2007-08 Drake squad that posted a 28-5 mark, captured the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and conference titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1971. In addition to serving as the recruiting coordinator with the Bulldogs, Davis was responsible for the defense, scouting and scheduling.
At Providence College from 2008-11, he coordinated the national recruiting efforts. The Friars posted 19 overall wins and 10 Big East wins in 2009, the most in school history for a first-year staff. The team went to the NIT that season while posting a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams, including No. 1 Pittsburgh. The staff posted two more wins over nationally-ranked teams, one each in 2010 and 2011. Providence also had a 92 percent graduation rate during his tenure.
Davis assisted in guiding UC Davis to the Big West Conference championship in 2014-15.
Chris Davis is a native of Jackson, Mich., and a graduate of Lumen Christi High School and Jackson Community College, from which he earned an associate’s degree.
Davis earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s in sports administration from Western Michigan.
Davis and his wife, Helen, have a son, Xavier, and a daughter, Gabriela.
