Katy (Clements) Ordway, a former Central Michigan gymnastics standout, is in her seventh year as an assistant coach with the Chippewa gymnastics program.
In 2025, Ordway helped guide the Chippewas to their fourth Mid-American Conference Championships title in five years (2022 regular season, 2022 championships, 2023 championships, 2025 championships).
In 2025, she helped mentor two individual standouts Hannah Appleget and Luciana Alvarado-Reid, as the former captured the all-around at the MAC Championships and the latter placed first in the floor exercise, earned an NCAA Regional berth as an all-arounder, and was named the MAC Gymnast of the Year.
In 2024, Ordway assisted as three Chippewas, Alvarado-Reid (all-around), Elizabeth Cesarone (vault) and Hallie Hornbacher (floor), qualified for the NCAA Fayetteville (Ark.) Regional.
In 2023, Ordway helped guide the Chippewas to their second straight MAC Championships title while seniors Hannah DeMers (all-around) and Taylor Pitchell (floor) advanced to NCAA Regional as individuals. DeMers was named MAC Gymnast of the Year and became the first gymnast in school history to earn four consecutive All-MAC regular-season honors and Alvarado-Reid captured the MAC Freshman of the Year Award.
CMU finished the 2023 season ranked first in the MAC on floor exercise with a 49.360 average, which placed the Chippewas 23rd nationally, and was second in the league on vault with a 49.09 average, which ranked 35th nationally.
In 2022, Ordway helped lead the Chippewas to the MAC Championships title and a share of the league regular-season crown. It marked the first time the Chippewas had swept the titles since 2018 as they finished with a flurry, scoring 196.125 or better in five of their final six meets.
DeMers captured the MAC Gymnast of the Year Award, Sierra DeMarinis was named the co-MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year, and head coach Christine MacDonald was named the MAC Coach of the Year.
DeMers won the all-around and sophomore Katie Kowalski tied for first on vault to lead the Chippewas at the MAC Championships. DeMers, DeMarinis and Kowalski each earned a spot on the all-tournament team, and the trio also qualified for the NCAA Regional. DeMers and DeMarinis each were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Kowalski earned a berth on the second team.
DeMers became the third Chippewa in four years to earn the MAC Gymnast of the Year Award after Denelle Pedrick accomplished the feat in 2019 and then repeated in 2020.
With Ordway overseeing the vault and floor exercise, the 2022 Chippewas finished the season ranked No. 1 in the MAC with a 49.08 national qualifying score in vault, and CMU finished 26th nationally on floor with a 49.27 NQS.
Ordway earned All-America honors in 2018, capping a standout career during which she was an NCAA Regional champion and a MAC champion on the balance beam, a three-time All-MAC honoree, a two-time team captain, and team Most Valuable Performer. As a senior, she was nominated for the prestigious NCAA Woman Athlete of the Year Award.
Ordway began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant and the Chippewas’ director of operations in 2019. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in journalism in 2018. She also directs the CMU Gym School.
As a student-athlete at CMU, Ordway completed an Athletic Director’s Leadership internship, was a member of the Athletic Director’s Table for Leadership Academy, and served on the Athletic Mission Statement Committee and as a mentor in the CHAMP program.
A native of Gainesville, Ga., Ordway was a member of the Dean’s List twice during her academic career at CMU and was a three-time National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Scholastic Academic All-American and a three-time member of the Academic All-MAC Team. She was named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete, received the MAC Medal of Excellence, and was named to the NCAA Emerging Leaders list.
