THE TEAM-- The Central Michigan University wrestling team travels west this weekend when it heads to Indianola, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 2, for the Simpson Duals and Ames, Iowa on Sunday, Dec. 3, to face Iowa State. Action is slated to begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. The team last competed on Nov. 18-19 at the Michigan State Open and placed 10 wrestlers.
THE COACH-- Tom Borrelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 93-55-5 overall and 34-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 27 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
WEEKEND PREVIEW-- The Chippewas will compete in the 13th annual Simpson Duals on Saturday, Dec. 2, at Cowles Fieldhouse in Indianola, Iowa. Among the schools competing include Iowa State (Division I) and Minnesota State-Mankato (Division II). Rounding out the field are Division III schools Simpson, Augustana (Ill), Coe, and William Penn. An "All-Stars" team will also be entered in the tournament comprised of extra wrestlers brought to the meet by some of the participating schools. This will be the first time the Chippewas have competed in the tournament.
On Sunday, Dec. 3, the Chippewas visit Iowa State at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. The Cyclones enter the weekend ranked third nationally and were runner-up in last year's NCAA National Championships. Two-time national champion, Cael Sanderson, anchors the Cyclones along with All-Americans Joe Heskett and Zach Thompson
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT-- "We have not wrestled in any duals yet this year," said head coach Tom Borrelli referring to the Simpson Duals. "Our team is going to wrestle in an intersquad match this week. That should help us get into the right frame of mind for this weekend."?
HEAD COACH TOM BORRELLI ON IOWA STATE-- "It will be exciting for our young team to compete at the Hilton Coliseum. It will probably sell out. Iowa State is ranked third nationally and was runner-up at last year's NCAA National Championships. Iowa State is probably looking beyond on us right now to Iowa who it meets on Dec. 8."
NOTES-CMU has faced only one of the school's competing in this weekend's Simpson Duals. The Chippewas own a 2-0 career record against Augustana (Ill)...Jim Kilcoyne (Portage/Fr.) pinned Mike Keenan of Michigan State in 18 seconds at the Michigan State Open on November 18-19. This puts Kilcoyne in a tie for the fifth fastest pin in school history.
