MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan women's basketball team dropped its exhibition opener to the Premier All-Stars on Saturday afternoon, 80-72, in Rose Arena.
The efforts of Mandy Elwer (Delphos, Ohio) and Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Jr.) helped the Chippewas maintain the lead through most of the first half. However, Rosalyn Barker and Megan McCabe led the All-Stars on a 12-point scoring stretch with less than five minutes in the first half. The All-Stars held a 34-30 lead going into the second half.
In the first half, CMU only hit 13 of its 41 shots (31.7 percent) including three-of 13 from behind the arc. Its counterparts, the All-Stars, hit on 50 percent of their shots (15-30).
The speed of the All-Stars held back the Chippewa attack in the second half while keeping the lead the entire time to secure the win. The All-Stars were led by Joni O'Connell who chucked in 12 points in the second stanza.
Molli Munz (Bellafontaine, Ohio/Jr.) tallied nine second-half points and Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) added another six but the Chippewas would only make 17 of their 44 shots in the second half.
The All-Stars nailed 46 second-half points and shot 50 percent from the field and had five players in double digits in scoring. With O'Connell's 20, the All-Stars had help from Lisa Cline's 14, Barker's 11, Tez's 10 and Drake tallied a double-double with her 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Chippewas were led by Jones who opened the campaign with a double-double by notching 12 points and grabbing 11 boards. Freshmen Elwer and Raina Harmon (Detroit) made an impressive debut for the Chippewas. Elwer posted 10 points from down low while Harmon added another 12 from the perimeter. Munz chipped in another nine points and added 10 assists.
The freshmen Harmon and Elwer each saw considerable minutes for their first time out. In their premier, Harmon logged 31 minutes while Elwer played for 24.
The Chippewas return to the hardwood next Saturday, Nov. 11, when they face the Houston Jaguars in the last of the exhibition games. Tip-off at Rose Arena is slated for 4 p.m.
