CLEVELAND — Central Michigan sophomore Madi Morson (Canton, Mich. / Salem) was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year, All-MAC First Team, the league office announced Tuesday morning, the fifth to claim the title in program history.
Fellow sophomore Ayanna-Sarai Darrington (Lexington, Ky. / Frederick Douglass) earned a listing on the All-MAC second team.
The Chippewas (18-11; 12-6 MAC) earned the league's fourth seed in the 2026 MAC Women's Basketball Tournament, will open the league postseason Wednesday afternoon against fifth-seeded Ohio (17-12; 11-7 MAC), an approximate start time of 1:30 p.m. ET.
Morson, in combination with the league's Freshman of the Year honor in 2025, is the first Chippewa and fourth player in MAC Women's Basketball history to win the awards in back-to-back seasons. Just 10 players have earned both laurels at any point in a career in MAC history.
The CMU standout led the league in scoring this season at 20 points per game, the first to average 20 for the program since Micaela Kelly's 2020-21 campaign. Morson ranks 16th in NCAA I in scoring average this season, seventh among first and second-year players.
A true three-level scorer, Morson shot 49.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three and 84.1 percent from the free throw line across 18 conference games.
Now a two-time All-MAC honoree with her 2025 second-team nod, Morson became the fastest player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points with two games to spare, in her 56th career appearance on Feb. 18. She holds both the freshman (511) and sophomore (581) season points records and is eight points away from seventh in program history for a single season.
Darrington led the conference with 3.52 offensive rebounds per game, just outside the top 30 nationally, and was second in field goal percentage (56.2, 23rd in NCAA I) to complete back-to-back top 10 seasons in program history. She finished eighth in the MAC in both points (14.7) and rebounds (7.1) per game.
