THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University wrestling team travels to Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday, Dec. 16, to take on Northwestern University. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Chippewas are 2-6-1 overall against the Wildcats. Last season, the two teams fought to a 15-15 tie. The Chippewas head into the match coming off a disappointing 37-0 loss at the hands of the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Ann Arbor. The Wildcats last competed on Nov. 24, when they took second-place at the Dual In The Desert in Tempe, Ariz.
THE COACH--Tom Borrelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 93-56-5 overall and 34-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 27 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
WEEKEND REVIEW-The Central Michigan wrestling team was defeated by the University of Michigan by a 37-0 count on Saturday, Dec. 9, in Ann Arbor. The eighth-ranked Wolverines swept the match that started with Joe DeGrain posting a 10-2 major decision over the Chippewas' Brett Faustman at 197 pounds. Michigan dominated the match, posting four major decisions and one pin. The loss was the second of the season for the Chippewas (3-2), while the Wolverines improved to 2-0 in dual competition. The Chippewas fall to 1-14 in the overall series against the Wolverines.
TOUGH TO SWALLOW-"We were actually in a few matches," said head coach Tom Borrelli on the Michigan dual meet. "The team just did not perform well enough to win. We have never put such a young team in this situation before, especially competing against top-10 schools right out of the chute."
THE AVENGERS-"Hopefully we will wrestle better," said Borrelli referring to this weekends' dual meet. "We should have a feel for what good is. The team has not done well lately against Northwestern, but we are excited."
NOTES-The Chippewas are 1-19 in their last 20 individual matches. Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.) picked up the lone victory when he recorded a major decision over Iowa States' Jacob Moore (18-6) at the 125 weight class...The Chippewas have not lost back-to-back dual meets since Jan. 16 and 22, 2000, when they dropped a 21-15 decision to the University of Michigan and a 27-11 decision to Cornell.
