THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University grapplers travel to Reno, Nev., on Wednesday, Dec. 20, to compete in the Reno Tournament. On Dec. 29-30, the Chippewa wrestlers travel to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the Midlands. Competition is scheduled all day for both tournaments. The Chippewas head into the Reno Tournament after posting a 26-10 victory over the Northwestern University Wildcats on Saturday, Dec. 16, in Evanston, Ill.
THE COACH--Tom Borrelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 94-56-5 overall and 34-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 27 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
WEEKEND REVIEW-The Central Michigan University wrestling team posted a 26-10 win over Northwestern on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The win improved the Chippewas record to 4-2 on the year while Northwestern fell to 2-2.
The Chippewas jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on wins from Jeff Pangborn (Durand/Fr.) at 184 and Brett Faustman (Mason/So.) at 197. After a win by Northwestern heavyweight Josh Saul, CMU captured victories in the next four weight classes, outscoring the Wildcats 15-0 in the span. Posting victories for CMU were Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.) at 125, Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./So.) at 133, Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis/Fr.) at 141, and Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio Fr.) at the 149 weight class.
After two more wins by the Wildcats, CMUs' Kevin Carr (Warsaw, Ind./Fr.) finished the day's final match with a 13-5 major decision over Andrew Curran at the 174 weight class.
TAMING THE CATS-"We were fairly pleased with our performance," said head coach Tom Borrelli, referring to the dual meet with Northwestern. "We scored a lot of points in our individual victories. It was a little disappointing in the matches we lost. We were out-hustled in some of them, but we wrestled hard overall."
HEAD COACH TOM BORRELLI ON THE RENO TOURNAMENT-"It will be a competitive tournament. There will be 13 teams there with many of them highly ranked. Some of the weight classes have six or seven nationally ranked individuals. The tournament will give our team a good opportunity to build its reputation if we wrestle well. It will also give us a chance to see some of the west coast schools we normally do not see."
BORRELLI ON THE MIDLANDS-"The Midlands is the premier individual tournament in the country leading up to the nationals. The competition is strong. Some of our guys have made names for themselves at this tournament."
