MOUNT PLEASANT--Desiree Eidson scored a career-high 21 points to help the Central Michigan women's basketball team to an 85-78 win over Lake Superior State University on Friday night at Rose Arena.
Two of Eidson's 21 points were a pair of crucial free throws with 1:53 to play that gave the Chippewas a 76-75 lead.
Alicia Rozak then nailed a three-pointer to extend the lead to 79-75.
The Lakers got as close as three points (81-78) with 26 seconds to go but Eidson and Tara Petrie both hit a pair of free throws to secure the win.
The win was the first for CMU interim head coach Ina Nicosia and improves CMU's record to 3-8 overall while the Lakers fall to 6-5.
The Chippewas jumped to a 12-6 lead early in the game before Lake Superior went on a 9-2 run to take a 15-14 lead with 11:04 to go in the first half.
The Lakers built their lead to as many as eight points before the Chippewas took a 40-39 halftime lead after outscoring LSSU 13-5 in the final four minutes.
There were seven lead changes in the early minutes of the second half before Lake Superior went on a 6-2 run to take a 54-48 lead with 13 minutes to go in the game.
Eidson tied the game at 55-55 with a jumper but the Lakers quickly reclaimed the lead on a Allyson Conaway layup and increased it to six points with 9:44 to go.
CMU countered with a 7-1 run to knot the game at 65-65 with 7:33 to go.
There were two lead changes and two ties down the stretch before Eidson hit two free throws at the 1:53 mark to give CMU the the lead for good.
Eidson's game-high 21 points marked the fourth straight game she has scored in twin figures. She shot 7-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the charity stripe and added eight rebounds and two steals.
Rozak scored 18 points while Vershaun Jones added 14.
Beth Kindel posted her third straight double-double performance with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Tara Petrie scored in double figures for the first time in a CMU uniform with 10 points.
The Lakers were led by Kendra Harris with 18 points while Conaway, Alice Duesing and Danielle Bundy all scored 11 points.
CMU returns to action on Jan. 3 to host Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.
