Akron Posts 68-60 Win Over Women's Basketball

AKRON, OH--The Central Michigan University women's basketball team (8-15, 5-7 Mid-American Conference) fell by a 68-60 count to the University of Akron (9-14, 5-7 Mid-American Conference) on Saturday afternoon at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
After being down by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Chippewas cut the lead to 56-52 with 3:07 to play. Akron then scored the next to baskets to increase its advantage to 60-52 with 2:22 to go. CMU cut the lead to four points two more times down the stretch before the Zips secured the win with six free throws in the last minute of action.
The Chippewas struggled in the opening half, shooting just .273 and falling behind, 35-25, at the break. The Zips took the halftime lead on strength of a .607 (17-28) shooting mark.
Akron outshot CMU, .436-.338, and outrebounded the Chippewas, 42-39.
Leading CMU was sophomore Vershaun Jones with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Shelly Woods chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.
Akron was led by four players scoring in double figures. Erica Glover scored 21, Cheryl Bowles 15, Katie Hank 12 and Abby Hoy 11.
The Chippewas host Northern Illinois on Feb. 17 and Toledo on Feb. 19.
