Four Chippewas Place At Michigan State Open

The Central Michigan University wrestling team kicked off the 1999-2000 season at the Michigan State Open this past weekend. Four Chippewas placed in the non-scoring event.
Heavyweight Jack Leffler (Morris, IL/So.) placed second with a 2-1 record in the tourney. He lost an 8-4 decision to Michigan State's Matt Lamb in the finals. Senior Vernon Cannon (Indianapolis, IN) took fourth at 165. He was 3-2 overall and lost a 6-4 decision in the third place match.
Senior Matt Nowak (South Bend, IN) placed seventh at 125 with a 2-2 slate. Redshirt freshman Derek Phillips (Grosse Pointe) was 3-3 at 141 and placed eighth. Mark Rusz (St. Charles/Fr.) went 3-2 in the tournament at 125 but did not place and Johnathan Reed (Midland/Fr.) was 2-2 at 157. Also competing for CMU were Russell Clark (Holt/Fr.) who went 1-2 at 157, Tom Welsh (Lansing/So.) who was 1-2 at 174 and John Ivers (New Lenox, IL/Sr.) who compiled an 0-2 mark at 133. Next up for the Chippewas is the Eagle Open at Ashland on Nov. 20 and the Keystone Classic at Pennsylvania on Nov. 21.
