The Central Michigan wrestling team (3-2-1, 1-0 Mid-American) lost to the ninth-ranked University of Michigan, 21-15, on Sunday afternoon in Rose Arena.
Early losses by Chris Vike (Stoughton, WI/Sr.) at 197 and heavyweight Jack Leffler (Morris, IL/So.) gave Michigan the early 6-0 lead. The Chippewas battled back with decisions by Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Jr.) over Mat Warner, 3-2, at 123 and Jordan Webster (Washington, IL/Fr.), 3-1, over A.J. Grant at 133. Michigan earned three straight wins at 141, 149 and 157 to gain a 16-6 advantage. Chippewa Vernon Cannon (Indianapolis, IN/Sr.) earned a major decision over Jason Rawls and Ryan Cunningham (Middleton/Sr.) pinned Charles Martelli to pull Central Michigan within three points. The final match at 184 pitted Chippewa Phil Baroni (Massapequa, NY/Sr.) against Andy Hrovat. Hrovat earned the victory in a close match, 6-3.
CMU travels to Penn State to participate in the National Duals on Jan. 22-23. The next home match is Jan. 28 against Northern Illinois at 7:30 p.m.
