Chippewas Pick Up First MAC Win

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University (4-10 overall, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) picked up its first conference win with a 74-69 win over Ball State University (8-5, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) on Saturday afternoon in Rose Arena.
Ball State opened the game by jumping to a 12-2 lead with 15:57 to play in the first half. The Chippewas went on a 14-0 run to close the half to take a 38-25 halftime advantage.
The Cardinals came out in the second half and went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 44-44 with 13:04 to play. The Chippewas then went on a 7-0 run to take a 51-44 advantage with 10:14 to go. BSU cut the lead to 55-53 with 7:29 left but the Chippewas again built their lead to nine points (63-54) with 5:44 left. BSU tied it up at 67-67 with 2:05 to play but Vershaun Jones hit a layup and a pair free throws to give CMU a 71-67 lead. Alicia Rozak secured the win for CMU with three free throws in the last minute of play.
Rozak led the Chippewas with a career-best 21 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Shelly Woods recorded her second double-double of the year with 19 points and a career-best 11 rebounds. Jones turned in a career day with 15 points and a career-best 19 rebounds and seven assists. Her 19 rebounds is good for a fourth-place tie on CMU's single game record list. The game marked her fourth double-double of the year and the sixth of her career. Molli Munz chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.
Laurie Kitts led Ball State with 22 points while Shala Crook had 16 points. Christy Jones had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The Chippewas travel to Eastern Michigan on Jan. 12.
