Wrestling Opens MAC Season At Ohio

THE TEAM--Central Michigan University wrestling coach Tom Borrelli looks to clinch his 100th career victory as head coach of the Chippewas when the team opens up the Mid-American Conference (MAC) portion of its schedule this Sunday, Jan. 21. The team will take on the Ohio University Bobcats in Athens, Ohio. Action is slated to begin at 2 p.m. The Chippewas are currently undefeated in their last 14 Mid-American Conference dual meets. The team has not lost since Jan. 25, 1998, when they were defeated by Ohio University, 22-17. The Chippewas look to improve on a series mark of 12-16 against the Bobcats. Last season, the team posted a 19-13 victory. The team heads into the weekend after finishing second with a 3-1 record at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., Jan. 12-13.
THE COACH--Tom Borrelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 99-59-5 overall and 34-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 27 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
VIRGINIA DUALS REVIEW--The Central Michigan University wrestling team went 3-1 en route to a second place finish at the Virginia Duals this past weekend. The Chippewas reached the championship match after knocking off Virginia (29-6), Wisconsin (18-16) and Missouri (22-9). No.19-ranked Lock Haven won the tournament by defeating the Chippewas, 24-6.
Leading the way for the Chippewas was Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) who went 4-0 at the 141 weight class. At 149, Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Fr.) was 3-1 and Brett Faustman (Mason/So.) finished 3-1 competing at the 197 weight class.
Other Chippewas competing in the Virginia Duals were Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.) who was 2-2 at the 125 weight class, Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./So.) 2-2 at 133, Brad Anderson (Grand Rapids/Fr.) 1-2 at 157, Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Fr.) 2-2 at 165, Kevin Carr (Milford, Ind./Fr.) 2-2 with a pin at 174, Jeff Pangborn (Durand/Fr.) 1-3 at 184 and Jack Leffler (Morris, Ill./Jr.) 2-1 at the heavyweight spot. Jim Kilcoyne (Portage/Fr.) also picked up a win wrestling at heavyweight.
NOTES-Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) has won seven straight matches and nine out of his last 11. The standout has earned a MAC "Wrestler of the Week" honor and was named to the Hampton Inn "Duels" All-Tournament team during this stretch.
