THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University wrestling team hosts Eastern Michigan University in Mid-American Conference competition on Sunday, Jan. 28 in Rose Arena. Action is slated to begin at 2 p.m. The Chippewas hold a commanding series mark of 42-9-1 against the Eagles. Last season, the Chippewas posted a 42-3 victory. The team heads into the weekend after beating the Ohio University Bobcats, 19-15, in their MAC opener on Sunday, Jan. 21.
THE COACH--Tom Borrelli enters his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 103-60-5 overall and 35-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 27 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
WEEKEND REVIEW--The Central Michigan University wrestling team won its MAC opener on Sunday knocking off Ohio, 19-15. The victory extended the Chippewas' MAC winning streak to 15 matches. The Chippewas win streak dates back to Jan. 25, 1998 whey they last lost to Ohio, 22-17.
Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.) began the day strong for the Chippewas with a 10-4 decision at the 125 weight class. After an Ohio victory at 133, the Chippewas earned consecutive victories by Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) who picked up a 2-0 decision at 141 and Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Fr.) who claimed a 6-3 decision at 149. Kevin Carr (Milford, Ind./Fr.) picked up a 2-1 decision at 174. The Chippewas finished the day picking up victories in their last two matches by Brett Faustman (Mason/So.) who knocked off No. 11-ranked Dan Bednar in an 8-6 decision at 197 and Jack Leffler (Morris, Ill./Jr.) who won 15-4 at heavyweight.
ARCH RIVALS-"Wrestling at Ohio is always a big rivalry for us," said head coach Tom Borrelli. "It is our Western Michigan weekend. Normally, the conference championship comes down to the winner of this match. Our team stepped up big. Faustman's upset victory was the deciding match for us. Overall, it was a big win for a young team."
CHANGE IN ATTITUDE-"Eastern Michigan is a much improved team this season," said Borrelli. "They had a coaching change that helped strengthen their attitude. The team is more competitive in the MAC this year than the last two years. This weekend's match will be big for them. We will have to be on our toes."
NOTES-Head coach Tom Borrelli is only the second wrestling coach in school history to achieve 100 or more career victories. Charles Sherwood (64'-89') was 195-126-6 in his 25-year tenure as head coach of the Chippewas. Borrelli also currently holds the second highest winning percentage in school history (.613) behind Dick Kirchner, 61-23-2, (.709)...The freshmen group of Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.), Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Fr.), Kevin Carr (Milford, Ind./Fr.) and Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Fr.) currently hold a combined record of 87-42...Jason Mester extended his winning streak to eight straight matches with his victory on Sunday against Ohio.
