Beth Kindel knows how to get things done. The 5' 11" forward was jolted by the news of coach Fran Voll's resignation, however, she felt it was a good opportunity for the team to rethink its attitude. Kindel is eager to express this new train of thought.
"As a team, we need to learn how to win again. After the game we go `Well, we played hard.' At this level, playing hard isn't good enough. The people in the community and on campus don't see us play hard, they want to see wins. We need to work on gaining the respect of the people who play us."
In high school, the Clare native was all-state, all-area, and all-conference in basketball and softball. Coming to Central to represent the university as an athlete was a dream come true.
"My dad has brought me to CMU women's games since fifth or sixth grade," Kindel explained. "Before I saw the campus or met the coaches, I knew I wanted to be here."
Last season was cut short by ankle surgery, but Kindel is now ready to step up to the challenge that college basketball provides.
"In college the game is more about playing a role and not being a star like in high school," Kindel explained. "You learn what your role is on the team and how to compliment other people. We don't have specific roles on our team. We don't have a dominant scorer. My role is to be a steady scorer. I need about ten points a game and rebound consistently."
The social work major is young and ready to work. As the season continues to develop, keep an eye on number 43 ... she's prepared for her role.
