THE CHIPPEWAS:
Central Michigan's women's basketball team looks to get back in the win column as it looks for its first conference win of the 2000-01 season.
CMU entered the Mid-American Conference (MAC) schedule with three wins, one more non-conference win than it had going into the conference last year. It has since gone 0-2 after opening conference competition last week. The Chippewas are now 3-10 overall with an 0-2 MAC mark.
The Chippewas kick off a three-game road swing with tonight's match-up at Bowling Green. CMU has not found success when it has left Mount Pleasant. It is 0-5 in true road games this year. The Chippewas picked up one win on road when it downed Harvard in a neutral-site affair, 69-52.
THE SERIES HISTORY -- Tonight's meeting marks the 42nd time these two teams will have met. Bowling Green has dominated the Chippewas winning 31 of the 41 contests. The Falcons have won the last four meetings and have won 14 of the last 16. The last time CMU downed Bowling Green was in 1997, 73-55.
THE LAST TIME -- Bowling Green topped CMU on Jan. 6, 2000 in Mount Pleasant, 80-69.
CMU led all but the last 28 seconds of the first half. The Chippewas enjoyed as much as a seven-point lead but it all dissipated when the Falcons scored eight points in the last 30 seconds to take the 36-33 halftime lead.
Bowling Green took control of the game in the second stanza. CMU managed to tie the game twice in the early goings but BGSU kept the Chippewas at bay. The Falcons' Francine Miller lit up the scoreboard with 20 second-half points to seal the victory for Bowling Green.
Molli Munz (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Jr.) had 10 points and five assists in that game. Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) tallied six points and had a 10-rebound effort while Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/So.) notched eight points.
BALL STATE RECAP -- Central Michigan lost its second straight conference game to Ball State last Saturday, 87-62.
Ball State was able to jump out to a quick 10-0 lead when it capitalized on four missed CMU layups. CMU cut the 10-point lead down to five with 11 minutes remaining, 18-13, but Ball State engineered a 16-9 run to increase their lead, 40-24. The Cardinals owned the halftime lead, 44-30.
BSU opened the second half with another 16-9 run and closed the game with another 10-3 run to keep the Chippewas far from contention.
Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) tallied her second double-double of the season, the third of her career. She poured in 17 points while hauling in 15 rebounds and notching four assists in the losing effort. Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/So.) came off the bench to post double-figure scoring numbers with a 12-point night.
LEADING THE CHIPPEWAS-- Ina Nicosia took over as the interim head coach for the Central Michigan Chippewas when former head coach Fran Voll resigned on Monday, Dec. 18. She is 1-4 in her young career. She has been the first assistant at Central Michigan going on her second season and was an assistant at James Madison from 1997-99. She played and coached basketball professionally in Belgium from 1995-97. The Vineland, N.J., native was an all-conference player in basketball and track and field for the University of Richmond. Nicosia graduated in 1994.
FEELING THE PAIN -- Kasey Kraft (Pickerington, Ohio/Fr.) has the lone injury for the Chippewas. She will be out with an injured hip.
WHERE THEY WERE PICKED -- The Chippewas were picked to finish sixth in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference according the MAC News Media poll.
FIVE STRAIGHT -- Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) has posted double-figure scoring numbers in five straight games. She had 16 at Michigan State (Dec. 20), 10 versus Oakland (Dec. 23), 18 against Lake Superior State (Dec. 29), 13 against Eastern Michigan (Jan. 3) and 17 in the Ball State loss (Jan. 6). She also tallied two double-doubles in that span with 10 boards at MSU and 15 against Ball State. The five-game scoring surge has made her CMU's top scorer this season with 146 points.
BOARDS GALORE -- Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) grabbed a career-high 15 boards against Ball State last Saturday, 11 of them on the defensive side. She also had 17 points for the second double-double of the season, the third of her career.
HOMECOMING -- Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/So.) will play in her first collegiate basketball game in her hometown tonight. The Toledo Catholic Central grad is slated as a starter against the Falcons.
SOLE POSSESSION OF SECOND -- Molli Munz (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Jr.) nailed one three-pointer in the 87-62 loss to Ball State last Saturday. She now owns sole possession of second place on the all-time three-point scorers' list. She passed former teammate Jodi Culbertson who has 112 career treys. Munz's 113 career threes is 15 off the pace set by Carrie Isanhart and her 128 career three-pointers.
CENTER OF ATTENTION -- Mandy Elwer (Delphos, Ohio/Fr,) reclaimed her starting center role after a seven-game absence from that position. She earned the start versus Ball State with a career-high 10-point night against Eastern Michigan. She put in eight points in the start versus Ball State.
CHARITABLE DONATIONS -- CMU went into last week's competition as the second-best free-throw team in the conference with a .718 average. It went 23-for-30 (.767) last week and upped its season average to .724. Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/So.) leads the team from the charity stripe with a .786 average. Molli Munz (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Jr.) and Beth Kindel (Clare/Fr.) aren't far behind with a .774 free-throw percentage.
OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES -- Central Michigan is 2-1 in games it shoots over .400. The only loss was the one-point overtime affair with Oakland University. CMU shot a season-best .509 against Lake Superior State. The Chippewas are shooting at a .355 clip which is lowest in the Mid-American Conference.
UP NEXT - CMU returns home to host the Ohio Bobcats on Jan. 20 and Toledo on Jan. 24. The Chippewas close out January with a road date at Northern Illinois (Jan. 27).
