MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University field hockey team (7-7, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Ball State Cardinals, 2-1, after two overtimes and two sets of penalty strokes, on Saturday afternoon.
The Chippewas took the lead at the end of the first half when Krystal Yee (Victoria, B.C./So.) scored on a pass from Melissa Lazarevski (Rochester, N.Y./Sr.) The score remained 1-0 until the Cardinals Allison Haynes scored with only 1:10 remaining in the game to send it to overtime.
The game remained tied after two 15-minute overtimes and proceeded to penalty strokes. In the first set of penalty strokes, Kristy Reed (South Wales, N.Y./Fr.) and Yee scored for the Chippewas while Betsy Quigg and Afton Hess scored for the Cardinals. In the second set of penalty strokes, Reed and Yee scored again along with Maria Neiswender (Hummelstown, Pa./Jr.) to give the Chippewas the 3-2 advantage and the win.
Chippewas goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Jr.) came up big making 13 saves in the game including six in the second overtime.
The Chippewas return to action Sunday, Oct. 21, when the No. 4-ranked Michigan Wolverines come to Kelly/Shorts Stadium at 1 p.m.
