Women's Basketball Tops All-Stars, 58-56

MOUNT PLEASANT -- It was a 40-minute game but it all boiled down to the final eight-tenths of a second.
The Central Michigan women's basketball team handed Eileen Kleinfelter her first win as Chippewa head coach in dramatic fashion. They topped the Premier All-Stars in exhibition action on Friday night, 58-56.
With the clock winding down, overtime looked inevitable. However, the All-Stars fouled Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Jr.) and sent her to the charity stripe with eight-tenths of a second left in the game. She iced the two freebies to lift the Chippewas past the All-Stars.
The Chippewas came out running and controlled the game for the first nine minutes of play. The All-Stars crept back into the game and the two would battle for the lead up until the half. They managed to wrangle the lead away from CMU and took a four-point lead into the half.
The All-Stars kept the momentum from the first half and upped their lead on the Chippewas by as much as 12. But, momentum doesn't play favorites and slowly, CMU cut the All-Stars' lead down to four with under two minutes to play.
The Chippewas went on a 6-0 run with 1:22 left in the game. Mandy Elwer (Delphos, Ohio/So.) put in a lay-up with 1:22 left, Kendra Martin (Muskegon/Jr.) added another lay-up with 46 ticks left on the clock and Eidson capped it off with her game-winning free throws in the final second of play.
Martin led the Chippewas with a 16-point effort. Eidson had 10 second-half points and finished the game with 12. Also putting up double-digit scoring numbers was Elwer with 10.
The Chippewas were aggressive under the glass as well. Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Sr.) led the way, hauling in nine boards. Elizabeth Widman (Solefta, Sweden/Jr.) added another seven rebounds and Elwer had six.
The Chippewas return to Rose Arena when they launch the season on Nov. 18. They host Wayne State with tipoff set for 1:30 p.m.
