BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Central Michigan women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games by topping Canisius College on Friday night, 61-40.
Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Sr.) led the Chippewa offense with her second double-double of the season. She poured in 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. She also tallied a game-high five steals. Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Jr.) scored in double-digit numbers for the third straight time. Eidson scored 13 points and Kendra Martin (Muskegon Heights/Jr.) came off the bench to score 13 as well.
The two teams exchanged scores at the onset but CMU went on an 11-1 run to capture the eight-point lead early in the first half. It would never lose the lead. The Golden Griffins fought back to tie it at 11 with 10 minutes left but the Chippewas closed the half with a 14-2 surge to capture the 13-point advantage. With a last-minute lay-up and one free throw, Canisius cut the Chippewas' halftime lead to 10.
CMU continued to dictate the pace of the game in the second stanza. The Chippewas' lead hung around the 15-point margin before CMU mastered an 11-2 drive to secure a 23-point cushion with two minutes left in the game. Canisius closed the game with a 5-0 run of its own but it wasn't enough as CMU cruised to the 21-point win.
Central was solid on defense scoring 22 points off of 27 Canisius turnovers. The Chippewas also proved to be solid under the glass, tallying 18 second-chance points to the Griffs' four.
The Chippewas return to action when they take on the Niagara Purple Eagles on Sunday, Dec. 1. Tipoff in Niagara Falls, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m.
