MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan women's track and field team will race around the track this weekend but it doesn't matter who finishes first this time. The Chippewas are trying to raise money in the memory of former teammate Kaelyn Carson (Comstock Park).
Carson was a high jumper for the Chippewas the last two seasons who lost the battle with anorexia nervosa last July. Carson was 20-years-old. Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by poor eating habits, malnutrition and excessive weight loss.
The track team will hold the Kaelyn Carson Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Indoor Athletic Complex. It will run from 6 p.m., to midnight. Money raised from the event will go towards a charity and a memorial in the name of Carson. The team will donate some of the proceeds to the National Association of Eating Disorders while the rest will help pay for a memorial tree and bench to be placed at Bennett Track.
"The loss of a teammate is hard on a team, especially to one as close as ours," said head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey. "We wanted to do something to honor Kaelyn's memory and create an awareness of eating disorders."
Pledge forms for the benefit walk are located at the Student Activity Center and at select locations around the Central Michigan University campus.
