ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Central Michigan women's basketball team stumbled in the championship game of the Southwest Lobo Shootout on Saturday night. Host New Mexico topped the Chippewas, 71-40.
Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/Jr.) and Kendra Martin (Muskegon Heights/Jr.) were named to the all-tournament team. Eidson had 22 points in the win over Long Island on Friday and 15 against New Mexico while Martin had a 31-point night against LIU.
Along with Eidson's 15 points against UNM, Molli Munz (Bellefountaine, Ohio/Sr.) chipped in nine points.
CMU and New Mexico exchanged the first two baskets but an eight-minute lapse by Central gave the Lobos a 20-4 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. Laurie Henderson (Newark, Ohio/.Jr.) hit a pull-up jumper at the 9:30 mark and the Chippewas tried to cut into the 16-point Lobo advantage. CMU out scored the Lobos 16-13 in the last 10 minutes but the Lobo lead stood at 13 points going into the half.
The Chippewas shot a meager 22.6 percent (7-for-31) in first half while UNM was scoring at a 50 percent clip (14-for-28).
Central came out firing in the second half as it scored the first four points of the second stanza. It cut the Lobo lead to nine points but that was as close as CMU would come to UNM. New Mexico went on a 15-5 scoring run after the pair of CMU buckets. The Lobo lead was at 22 after the early, second-half surge. The Chippewas scored eight points in the final 10 minutes while the Lobos poured in 18. The Lobos went on to win the Southwest Lobo Shootout with the 31-point victory.
The Chippewas return to action shortly after the holiday when they host Northwood on Saturday, Dec. 29. Tipoff in Rose Arena is set for 2 p.m.
