Women's Track Gears Up For MAC Championships

THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's track and field team hosts the Mid-American Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24. Competition starts at 11 a.m., each day.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU women's track and field program is headed up by head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey and assistant coaches Karen Lutzke and Larry Levine. Raske Sparrey led the Chippewas to fourth-place finishes at both the 2000 MAC indoor and outdoor finals. Lutzke was named MAC cross country "Coach of the Year" after helping the squad to the 2000 MAC championship while Levine, who is in his fourth year, works with the throwers and directs CMU's strength and conditioning program for the throwing events.
LAST WEEKEND--The Chippewas competed hosted the nonscoring Jack Skoog Open on Friday night.
Melissa Brousseau (Alpena/Sr.) led the Chippewas with a school-record performance in the shot put. Brousseau won the event with a mark of 48-5 1/2, bettering her own school record of 48-5 1/4.
Also winning events were LaQuesha Wiley (Southfield/Jr.), Abby Jaroscak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Jr.), Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Jr.), Brook Creed (Walkerville/Jr.), Jackie Bozin (Washington/Fr.) and Jane Ludtke (White Cloud/Jr.).
Wiley took top honors in the 60m in a time of 7.78. She also finished second in the long jump (18-8).
Jaroscak won the 200m in a time of 26.58. She also took second in the 60m (7.88) and 60m hurdles (9.03).
Derezinski finished first in the 60m hurdles (8.95) and took second in the triple jump (37-11.25).
Creed finished first in the 800m (2:15.48), Bozin won the high jump (5-6) and Ludtke won the 20-pound weight (54-8 1/4). The CMU 4x400m relay team also won (3:57.41).
RASKE SPARREY ON THE SKOOG OPEN--"We are right were we need to be and it showed because we had some great performances. The competition wasn't as good as our last couple of meets but we still ran well."
RASKE SPARREY ON THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS--"We have always been a team that has stepped it up during the MAC championships and I hope that we can do that again this year. Our times this year are right up there at the top of the MAC and I hope that we will finish that way."
UPCOMING--Central Michigan competes at the Last Chance meet at Eastern Michigan on March 1.
