Women's Basketball Wraps Up Season

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan women's basketball team wrapped up the 2000-01 campaign with a pair of games against Northern Illinois University.
The Chippewas fell to NIU in the regular season finale on Feb. 27 by a 67-51 count.
The Huskies were also Central's first round tournament opponent on March 3 at Evans Field House. The result was the same as NIU posted a 57-35 win to move on to the second round of the MAC tournament.
The losses end a frustrating season for the Chippewas. Central ended the season with a 4-24 overall record and a 1-15 Mid-American Conference slate.
Central's one conference win is the fewest in school history. The 1995-96 squad posted a 2-16 MAC mark. CMU's lone MAC win came against rival Western Michigan (74-58) on Feb. 21.
CMU's four wins is the fewest since the 1995-96 team posted five victories while the 24 losses is the most in school history.
LAST WEEK -- Central Michigan ended the regular season with a 67-51 loss to Northern Illinois on Feb. 27 at Rose Arena.
The Chippewas held an 8-2 lead early in the contest before the Huskies went on a 15-0 run to take a 17-8 lead with 13:09 to go in the opening half.
CMU wasn't out of the game yet. The Chippewas followed NIU's offensive outburst with a 12-4 run to cut the Huskie lead to 21-20 with 8:45 to go.
Central would get as close as a point one more time before Northern Illinois outscored CMU 15-2 to close out the opening stanza. NIU entered the halftime break with a 38-24 advantage.
Northern Illinois kept the pressure on in the second half building its lead to as many as 22 points.
CMU made a run in the late stages of the game to cut the lead to 12 points (59-47) but NIU hit a three-pointer and three free throws to put the game away.
Key to Northern Illinois' win was its strong shooting. The Huskies shot 51 percent (28-55) while holding CMU to a 33 percent (18-55) mark.
Beth Kindel (Clare/Fr.) led CMU with 17 points while Molli Munz (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Jr.) had 11 points and a team-best five rebounds.
NIU was led by Michelle Johnson who had 16 points and Jennifer Youngbood who had 15 points. Kristan Knake added 13 while Kim Boeding chipped in 10.
The Chippewas dropped a 57-35 decision to Northern Illinois in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference playoffs on March 3 at Evans Field House.
Mandy Elwer (Delphos, Ohio/Fr.) scored the opening basket of the game but NIU went on a 13-0 run to jump to an 18-8 lead.
The Huskies scored the last four points of the half to take a 32-17 advantage into the half.
Northern Illinois built up a 17-point lead in the early stages of the second half before CMU scored eight unanswered points to cut the lead to 34-27 with 13:47 to play.
NIU responded with a 10-1 run to build its lead back up to 20 points (50-30) with 4:53 to play in the game.
Central wouldn't get any closer than 18 points as the Huskies cruised to the win.
Elwer led Central Michigan with 10 points and 12 rebounds in posting her second double-double of the season.
The Huskies were led by Lindsay Secrest with 11 points and Jennifer Youngblood with 10.
FAB FROSH -- Freshman Beth Kindel was a double threat for the Chippewas. She led the Chippewas in scoring with an 11.2 average and was second in rebounding with a 6.8 mark. Kindel is first freshman to be tops in scoring at CMU since Sue Nissen led with 507 points in 1987. She tied for the top spot with nine blocked shots and also had 44 assists and 28 steals.
MIGHTY MUNZ -- Junior Molli Munz became CMU's all-time three-point leader with 146 treys. Her 53 three-pointers in 2000-01 ranks fourth on Central's season leader list. Munz ended the season with an 8.9 scoring average and a team-high 62 assists. She now has 258 career assists to rank eighth on CMU's career list.
DOUBLE THE FUN -- Mandy Elwer posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds in the playoff game against Northern Illinois.
REBOUND LEADER -- Vershaun Jones (Detroit/Jr.) led the Chippewas in rebounds with a 6.9 average. For her career, she has 578 boards which is just 20 away from the 10th spot on CMU's career list. Jones also led CMU with 42 steals.
STEPPIN' UP -- Desiree Eidson (Bowling Green, Ohio/So.) and Laurie Henderson (Newark, Ohio/So.) both stepped up their point production from their freshman campaigns. Eidson averaged 3.5 points last year and 7.0 in 2000-01 while Henderson had 1.2 points a year ago and 5.1 this season.
ROZAK IN DOUBLE FIGURES -- Alicia Rozak (Sterling Heights/Jr.) averaged 10.1 points a game in 2000-01. She was third with 47 assists and also posted 3.9 rebounds a game.
DISHING IT OUT -- Tara Petrie (Pickerington, Ohio/Fr.) was second on the squad with 55 assists. She ended the year with 3.1 points per game.
