Wrestling Gets Ready For NCAA Championships

THE TEAM-- The Central Michigan University wrestling team prepares for the NCAA championships set for March 15-17 at the University of Iowa.
Set to compete at the NCAA finals are Mid-American Conference champions Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) and Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Fr.) and wildcard picks Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.),Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./So.) and Brett Faustman (Mason/So.).
The Chippewas are aiming for a top-20 finish for the fourth straight year. CMU took fifth in 1998, seventh in 1999 and 20th in 2000.
THE COACH--Tom Borrelli is in his 10th season as head coach of the Chippewas. CMU is 107-60-5 overall and 39-11 in the MAC under Borrelli. The veteran coach has been named MAC "Coach of the Year" four times and was tabbed "National Coach of the Year" by two organizations in 1998. He has coached 29 MAC champions and 11 All-Americans. Central has finished in the top 10 nationally in two of the last three seasons.
MAC TOURNEY RECAP--Central Michigan took second place at the Mid-American Conference championships that were held on March 3-4 at Ohio University.
Ohio won the title with 74.5 points and was followed by Central Michigan (63.5), Kent State (62), Buffalo (58), Northern Illinois (33.5) and Eastern Michigan (23.5).
Central had a pair of individual champions in Jason Mester and Ty Morgan.
Mester defeated Ryan Egan of Northern Illinois, 7-2, to capture the 141 pound title while Morgan posted a 6-1 win over Bill Jacoutot of Buffalo to win the 149 crown
CMU had four other wrestlers in championship matches.
Ahmad Sanders lost to Brent Thompson of Kent State, 6-2, in the 125 final. He finished the tournament in second place.
Jordan Webster fell to Buffalo's Shawn Kegal, 10-5, in the 133 title match. Webster took second with a 4-3 victory over Anthony Carrizales of Ohio.
Kevin Carr dropped his 174 match to Luke Moore of Ohio by a 2-1 count. He took third after falling to Mike Feeney of Eastern Michigan (3-2).
Brett Faustman lost to Dan Bednar of Northern Illinois, 4-3, at 197. Faustman finished second with a 9-3 win over Zeb Miller of Kent State.
Jack Leffler (Morris, Ill./Jr.) wrapped up third place with a 3-1 decision over Kent State's Jim Swetter at heavyweight.
MAC AWARD WINNER-- Freshman Jason Mester was named the MAC "Freshman of the Year." Mester, the fifth CMU wrestler to earn the honor, currently has a 35-8 record and posted a perfect 5-0 slate during the MAC regular season.
STREAK SNAPPED--CMU's string of three straight MAC tournament titles ended when Ohio dethroned the defending champions. Central won the regular season MAC crown with a perfect 5-0 record but finished second to the Bobcats at the tournament.
ALL-MAC--Jason Mester and Ty Morgan earned first-team All-MAC honors while Ahmad Sanders was selected to the second team.
