Women's Track Has The Week Off

THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's track and field team has the week off before competing at the Drake Relays on April 27-28.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU women's track and field program is headed up by head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey and assistant coaches Karen Lutzke and Larry Levine. Raske Sparrey led the Chippewas to fourth-place finishes at both the 2000 MAC indoor and outdoor finals. Lutzke was named MAC cross country "Coach of the Year" after helping the squad to the 2000 MAC championship while Levine, who is in his fourth year, works with the throwers and directs CMU's strength and conditioning program for the throwing events.
LAST WEEKEND--Central had a pair of athletes win events at the Sea Ray Relays held at the University of Tennessee.
Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Jr.) took first place in the heptathlon with 5,182 points. She had first-place finishes in the long jump and high jump to help her the victory. In addition to the win, Derezinski provisionally qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships.
Suzy Bozin (Washington/Jr.) took top honors in the high jump with a mark of 5-11 1/2. She tied her own school record and also provisionally qualified for the NCAA finals.
Other CMU athletes competing included: Jackie Bozin (Washington/Fr.) who took 10th in the heptathlon (4,180 points), Brook Creed (Walkerville/Jr.) 19th in the 1,500m (4:34.23), Melissa Miller (Portland/Fr.) 22nd in the 1,500m (4:36.40), Amber Bright (Lake Ann/So.) 20th in the 400m hurdles (62.57), Kia Johnson (East Amherst, N.Y./So.) 34th in the 200m (24.81), Erin Miner (Webster, N.Y./Jr.) 34th in the 800m (2:14.92), and Desha Feldpausch (Fowler/So.) ninth in the steeplechase (11:38.68).
The Chippewas took second at the Michigan Triangular on April 14 at Ferry Field.
The Wolverines won with 190.5 points and were followed by CMU with 95.5 and Michigan State with 71.
The Chippewas were led by five second-place finishes. Abby Jaroscak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Jr.) took second in the 100m hurdles (14.65), Kelli Wilson (Swartz Creek/So.) second in the high jump (5-1.25), Amanda Storck (Twin Lake/Fr.) second in the pole vault (10-6), Tracy Yiirs (Grand Ledge/Sr.) second in the shot put (44-8.75), and Natasha Reynolds (Warren, Pa./Fr.) second in the javelin (128-4).
Other strong performances were turned in by: Shannon Webster (Dearborn/Fr.) who finished third in the 3,000m (11:12.42), Jillian Hinds (Warren/Fr.) took third in the pole vault (10-6), Jessie Barhorst (Minster, Ohio/So.) finished third in the high jump (4-11.50), Katherine Lolli (Northville/Fr.) took third in the 400m (58.80), and Jaroscak took third in the 100m (12.64).
SPARREY ON THE WEEK OFF--"We will train through the weekend and enjoy the weekend off. This will allow our kids to get in some precious study time. We have been going every weekend since March 24."
SPARREY ON LAST WEEKEND--"We went to two different meets and I was pleased with our performances. CMU has never had a Sea Ray champion and we had two. To have two Sea Ray champions is a great step forward for our program."
A PAIR OF NCAA PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS--Suzy Bozin and Maria Derezinski both not only won events at the highly competitive Sea Ray Relays but they both posted NCAA provisional marks in the high jump for the second week in a row. Bozin took top honors in the high jump with a mark of 5-11 1/2 to tie her own school record while Derezinski had 5,182 points in the heptathlon. The NCAA finals are set for June 1-3 at Oregon.
UPCOMING--Central Michigan heads to the Drake Relays on April 27-28.
