Women's Track Competes At Indiana

THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's track and field team competes at Indiana on Saturday, April 7, at 12:30 p.m. Joining the host Hoosiers are Ball State, Cincinnati and CMU.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU women's track and field program is headed up by head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey and assistant coaches Karen Lutzke and Larry Levine. Raske Sparrey led the Chippewas to fourth-place finishes at both the 2000 MAC indoor and outdoor finals. Lutzke was named MAC cross country "Coach of the Year" after helping the squad to the 2000 MAC championship while Levine, who is in his fourth year, works with the throwers and directs CMU's strength and conditioning program for the throwing events.
LAST WEEKEND--The Chippewas competed at the non-scoring Purdue Open last Friday and Saturday.
The Chippewas were led by a pair of athletes who won events.
Melissa Brousseau (Alpena/Sr.) took top honors in the shot put with a throw of 45-10 3/4 while Suzy Bozin (Washington/Jr.) won the high jump with a school-record mark of 6-0.
Other top performances were turned in by: Kia Johnson (East Amherst, N.Y./So.) who finished second in the 100m (12.25), Amber Crenshaw (Coldwater/Sr.) third in the 10,000m (38:26.92), Tracy Yiirs (Grand Ledge/Sr.) third in the shot put (44-10 3/4), Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Jr.) sixth in the 100m hurdles (14.97), Abby Jaroscak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Jr.) sixth in the 100m (12.61) and seventh in the 100m hurdles (15.01), Natasha Reynolds (Warren, Pa./Fr.) fourth in the javelin (133-0) and Jessie Barhorst (Minster, Ohio/So.) sixth in the javelin (116-0). In addition, the 4x100m relay team finished fifth (47.63).
ON GOING TO INDIANA-- "It's going to be a high level of competition with Indiana, Ball State and Cincinnati. Indiana has great facilities and it should be a good meet."
ON LAST WEEKEND--"We had a lot of kids competing in events for the first time in the outdoor season. We've had a good start to the outdoor season so far and hope to keep it going."
BOZIN SETS RECORD--Suzy Bozin set the CMU high jump record with a leap of 6-0 at the Purdue Open. The mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The NCAA finals are set for June 1-3 at Oregon.
UPCOMING--Central Michigan competes at the Sea Ray Heptathlon on April 11-12.
