MOUNT PLEASANT -- Success breeds success and while the Central Michigan wrestling team reflected on its successes on the mat last season, it also earned recognition for its accomplishments in the classroom.
The Chippewas were recognized for their pursuits off the mat as they finished fifth in the country in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) top 25 Division I academic team rankings. The team has a 3.187 cumulative grade point average. Only Princeton (3.430), Stanford (3.235), Boston College (3.226) and Harvard (3.223) finished better than CMU. The only other Mid-American Conference team to crack the top 25 was Northern Illinois. The Huskies are 25th with a 2.889 GPA. It marks the third-highest finish for the Chippewas and is the highest team GPA in the last nine years.
Garnering individual NWCA all-academic honors were Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./So.), Brett Faustman (Mason/So.) and Ty Morgan (New Carlisle, Ohio/Fr.). Webster and Faustman earned first team all-academic accolades. Webster owns a 3.86 GPA and qualified for the NCAA championships after going 18-11 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Faustman finished with a 3.65 GPA. He was 22-11 last year, 5-0 in the MAC, and qualified for the NCAA championships. Morgan finished with all-academic second team honors. He had a 3.56 GPA. Morgan finished with a 27-13 record, a 5-0 MAC slate and was a national qualifier in his freshman season.
The team also honored its top performers as well at its annual banquet last month.
Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) earned three awards as he was named the team's "Most Outstanding Wrestler" and finished with the most takedowns and most team points. Mester was an impressive 32-10 in his freshman campaign and was also named the MAC's "Freshman of the Year" at the season's end.
Morgan was named the team's "Freshman of the Year," Ahmad Sanders (Flint/Sr.) earned the coach's award and Faustman garnered recognition as the "Most Improved."
