Wrestling Sends Pair To International Tournament

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Two Central Michigan wrestlers will compete for the United States at the 2001 FILA Junior World Championships.
Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) and Russell Vanderheyden (Rockton, Ill./Fr.) were freestyle tournament champions at their respective weight classes and will be two of eight grapplers to compete in the international competition in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Aug. 22-26.
Mester went 5-0 at 63 kilograms (kg) and scored three technical falls while Vanderheyden posted a 5-0 mark at 85 kg. He had two falls and one technical fall.
David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Fr.) finished fourth at 69 kg with a 5-2 mark and Kevin Carr (Warsaw, Ind./Fr.) took fifth at 76 kg with a 4-2 slate.
Five other Chippewa grapplers competed at the Junior National Championships and World Team Trials but did not place. Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant/Fr.) was 2-2 at 58 kg, Adam Hopkins (Greenville/Fr.) was 1-2 at 69 kg, Brad Anderson (Grand Rapids/Fr.) was 1-2 at 76 kg, Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Fr.) competed at 76 kg and finished at 2-2 and Alex Lammers (Huber Heights, Ohio/Fr.) wrestled at 85 kg and had a 2-2 mark.
Athletes who compete in the FILA junior age group are between the ages of 17 and 20. The group includes college freshmen, military athletes and high school wrestling stars and they compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
