Chippewa Wrestlers Eliminated in National Duals

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The Central Michigan wrestling team (4-4, 0-0 Mid-American) scored a dramatic win over No. 15 Edinboro, 17-16, but didn't have enough to defeat Iowa, 36-6, and Iowa State, 24-17, at the National Duals in Columbus, Ohio. The two losses eliminates CMU from the tournament.
Central Michigan got off to a slow start losing its first eight matches in a loss to No. 5 Iowa, 36-6. CMU's lone win was by Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Fr.) when 13th-ranked Ryan Fulsaas of Iowa injury defaulted. Central had close matches at 133 and 174 but the Hawkeyes were able to get points late in the third period to keep the Chippewas off the board. Tony Gansen, (Belle Plain, Minn./Sr.) a transfer from Oklahoma State, made his debut for the Chippewas at 174. He lost a close match to 11th-ranked Tyler Nixt when Nixt scored two late takedowns to secure the match, 10-6. The loss sent the Chippewas into the consolation bracket.
Central Michigan battled back against No. 15 Edinboro, picking up the victory, 17-16. After Edinboro took a 3-0 lead after in the 125-pound match, Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Jr.) tied it up with a win over 13th-ranked Cory Ace, 8-7. The Fighting Scots took a 6-3 with a win at 141 but CMU's Ty Morgan (Huber Heights/So.) at 149 scored a major decision, 13-2, to give CMU the lead in the match, 7-6. David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Fr.) increased CMU's lead to 10-6 with a win at 157.
Edinboro won two straight to take a 13-10 lead before Tony Gansen at 184 put CMU up by one with a major decision, 16-5. After a Edinboro victory at 197, the match came down to the final match between heavyweights Jack Leffler of CMU and Josh Pearce of Edinboro. Edinboro entered the match with a two-point lead and the match entered the third period tied before Leffler was able to takedown Pearce and gain the riding time point by two seconds for the victory, 4-3.
CMU wrestled No. 6 Iowa State next, falling to the Cyclones, 24-17. The Chippewas got on the board first when Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant/Fr.) won by forfeit. Iowa State went on to win the next five matches before Tony Gansen broke that streak with a victory over 19th-ranked Nick Passolano, 4-1. Ty Morgan almost broke the streak of Iowa State wins at 149 against seventh-ranked Billy Maldonado, but lost in double overtime on a staling call, 5-4. At 184, Alex Lammers (Huber Heights/Fr.) beat ninth-ranked Austen Palmer in double overtime after not allowing Palmer to score in the second overtime period. Iowa State won the next match at 197 and forfeited at heavyweight to wrap up the dual and send the Chippewas home.
Central Michigan returns home on Friday, Jan. 25, when it opens its conference season against Ohio in Rose Arena. These two team were picked by the MAC coaches to finish first and second in the conference. CMU was picked top finish first and Ohio second. The dual is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
