THE TEAM- The Central Michigan University women's track and field team will travel to Ann Arbor to compete in the Michigan Intercollegiates on Saturday, Jan. 26. Other teams competing in the scored meet are Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Detroit Mercy.
THE COACHING STAFF-The CMU women's track and field program is headed up by head coach Kathleen Raske and assistant coaches Karen Lutzke and Larry Levine. Raske led the Chippewas to a fourth-place finish at the indoor 2001 MAC indoor finals and a sixth-place finish at the outdoor finals. Lutzke was named MAC cross country "Coach of the Year" after helping the squad to the 2000 MAC championship while Levine, who is in his fifth year, works with the throwers and directs CMU's strength and conditioning program for the throwing events.
LAST WEEKEND - The Central Michigan University's women's track squad competed in the Red Simmons Invitational on the campus of the University of Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 19. Other teams participating in the non-scoring event were Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Michigan State, University of Toronto and Windsor Legion.
Suzy Bozin had her season-best jump in the high jump (5-10) en-route to finishing in first place. The only other top finisher for the Chippewas, Kristin Podein who turned in a time of 5:03.75 in the mile.
Amanda Storck with a school-record 11-8 in the pole vault and Kia Johnson in the 400m (57.39) were the lone Chippewas to finish in the second spot. Finishing in the third position were Fallon Bailey in the 60m (7.74), Amber Bright in the 400m (58.20) and Jackie Bozin clearing the bar at 5-6 in the high jump.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER - "We are looking to see where we stack up," said Raske about the Michigan Intercollegiates. "We need to start putting things together to finish on top. Michigan looks like the front-runner and we will have to step it up to make a run at them."
NO PAIN NO GAIN - "We were a little banged up and our legs were sore," said Raske about the Red Simmons. "We are still feelling the effects of Christmas break. Normally athletes are sore after the second week of competition. We still had some good performances and are looking to improve every week."
SUZY'S SOARING- Suzy Bozin provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor championship meet in the high jump with a mark of 5-10 at the Red Simmons Invitational. If Bozin makes it to the championship meet it will be the third time in her career. She finished 16th last year.
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS - Amanda Storck reached heights never achieved before in CMU women's history. Storck set Central indoor pole vault record with a jump of 11-8 at the Red Simmons Invitational. She broke the old mark of 11-0 that Dawn Burrows set in 1999.
