Mount Pleasant - The Central Michigan University field hockey team (9-4, 3-1 Mid-American Conference) defeated a higher-ranked team for the first time this season with a 3-1 win over No. 24 ranked (National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll) Ohio on Thursday afternoon.
Katie Coccia (Rochester, N.Y./Jr.) gave the Chippewas an early 1-0 lead when she knocked a ball out of the air past the Bobcat goaltender at 8:53 in the first half.
Ohio struck back in the second half with an Elizabeth Holtzman goal to knot the game at one.
Allison Foland (Springfield, Va./Jr.) answered back with a goal at 46:44 in the second half, which proved to be the game-winner.
Kristy Reed (South Wales, N.Y./So.) added her team-leading eighth goal of the season for insurance.
CMU's defense held the Bobcats to only four shots in the game, while the offense ripped 11 of its own. The Chippewas return to action tomorrow, October 11, at 2 p.m., when they welcome No. 7 Kent State to Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
