MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University women's basketball head coach Eileen Kleinfelter has announced the signing of four athletes to national letters-of-intent this afternoon.
Joining the team for the 2003-04 campaign will be Kristen Seright (Indianapolis, Indiana/Carmel), Ann Skufca (Holly/Flint Powers), Dana Westover (Maple City/Glen Lake), and Morgan Wills (Granville, Ohio/Granville).
"We are very pleased with this year's recruiting class," commented the second-year head coach, Eileen Kleinfelter. "They will play an integral role in our future success here at CMU. This class, along with our returning players, will give us a solid nucleus to build upon next season.
"Of course, lack of experience will be the only thing missing. As incoming freshmen, we will look for them to contribute immediately, adding the much-needed size to our inside game. Their ability to get up and down the floor will also add to our transition game. All four of them are offensively sound with solid three-point shooting and passing skills. They will also add enthusiasm, excitement, and love of the game. We truly feel this recruiting class will eventually take us to another level once they gain playing experience."
Seright (SEE-right) is a 6-3 forward/center who shows a lot versatility on the court. She shot .484 from the field last season, including 11-for-22 from behind the arc. Seright also shot .800 from the charity stripe. She posted averages of 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in her junior campaign. Seright blocked 58 shots en route to honorable mention all-conference and all-state honors. Seright has been a four-year starter on the varsity squad and will be a captain entering her senior campaign.
"Kristen adds size in the paint and will be a fluid scorer for us," Kleinfelter said. "She can mix it up inside, is a strong rebounder, and has good range. In addition, she is able to get up and down the floor extremely well for a post player. Kristen plays for one of the largest high schools in Indiana affording her the opportunity to compete at a high level."
Skufca (SCUFF-ka) will join CMU from a successful high school program in Flint Powers. She has helped her team win state titles the last two years, and finished second in her freshman season. Ann is a starter on a team that currently sits at 18-1, and is an astounding 99-4 in Skufca's four-year career. She is a versatile player, with the ability to shoot the three, take it to the hole, and dish it off. She leads the team with 59 assists (3.5 average), and also has averages of 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 2.6 steals. In addition to two state titles, the second team all-stater has led Flint Powers to four league titles, three district titles, and three regional championships.
"Ann will also add size to our roster at the forward position," Kleinfelter said. "She can extend her shot to the three-point arc and mix it up inside. In addition to her scoring abilities, Ann possesses excellent passing skills and is an excellent playmaker. She runs the floor extremely well. Coming from a very successful high school program rich in tradition, Ann not only knows the game well, but also knows what it takes to win."
Westover has had a breakout senior campaign on a team that is currently 15-5. After spending three seasons behind "Miss Basketball," Liz Shimek, Westover has stepped up to average 18.2 points and 14 rebounds per game. She is an athletic 6-2, who plays any position on floor. Westover is a two-sport athlete at Glen Lake as well. She was a member of the state championship girls track team, qualifying for hurdlers, and placing fifth as a member of the 4x100m relay team.
"Dana is a well-rounded forward," said Kleinfelter. "She has played every position on the floor for her high school team. Her ballhandling and passing skills are exceptional for a forward along with her three-point shooting ability. At 6-2, Dana can get up and down the floor with the best of them. As a proven track athlete, she has outstanding quickness and leaping ability. She is an all-around player that will add athleticism to our team."
Wills is a 5-7 guard for Granville High. Last season, she averaged 17.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.8 steals. She was deadly accurate from behind the arc, shooting an astounding 50 percent from three-point range. Her junior-year efforts landed Wills on the Division II All-Ohio first team and AP all-state first team. She was also named the District 11 "Player of the Year," and the Division II Central District "Player of the Year." Other accolades from her junior year include all-state first team (coaches association), first team Mid-State League, and team MVP.
As a sophomore, Wills averaged 16.0 points, 4.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.8 steals. She was named all-state honorable mention, first team all-district, first team all-league, as well as team MVP.
"Morgan is a true point guard who can also play the two guard position," commented Kleinfelter. She is a playmaker as well as a scoring threat, especially from behind the three-point arc. Morgan has the potential to become an outstanding floor general as she develops over the years. She understands the game well and once she gains experience, she will be another coach on the floor."
