MOUNT PLEASANT - Ball State University's Andy Roesch picked apart Central Michigan University's defense for 304 yards and five touchdowns in leading the Cardinals to a 38-21 Mid-American Conference victory here Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals are now 5-5 for the season and 3-3 in MAC play while the Chippewas fell to 4-7 and 2-5 in league action.
Ball State jumped out to a 21-0 lead late in the second period before CMU managed to score just before the break to make it 21-7 at intermission.
However, any momentum that CMU might have had quickly disappeared in the third period when the Cardinals scored 10 points to make it, 31-7.
Roesch completed 22-of-32 passes in the fifth start of his career. The junior's five TDs set the Kelly/Shorts Stadium mark for scoring passes in a game. The old mark of four was held by three different quarterbacks.
CMU QB Derrick Vickers hit Steve Messam with a two-yard pass with 22 seconds to go in the half for the Chippewas' first score. Vickers then scored on a two-yard run in the third period.
The final Chippewa tally came in the fourth quarter when redshirt freshman Kent Smith engineered a 70-yard drive in 10 plays that resulted in a one-yard scoring scamper by Terrence Jackson.
CMU closes the 2002 season with a home game on Saturday, Nov. 23, against Western Michigan.
