Chippewa Women Roll to 69-62 Win Over Canisius

MOUNT PLEASANT - Freshman guard Casey Manning came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points to lead the Central Michigan University women's basketball team to a 69-62 non-conference win over Canisius College here Monday night.
Manning, whose previous high was seven points against Yale, poured in 14 second-half points to help the Chippewas erase a 33-30 halftime deficit.
CMU finishes non-league play with a 6-5 record while Canisius falls to 5-5 for the campaign.
Canisius jumped out quickly on the Chippewas, holding six-points leads on two occasions in the first half, the last at 19-13 with 11:48 remaining.
The Golden Griffins also held a six-point margin early in the second half at 36-30 with 18:45 to play. CMU took the lead for good on a three-pointer by freshman Erin Kuhl with 10:30 to play, 45-44. The Chippewas kept building on that margin, going ahead by as many as 12 points twice, the last one at 1:04 on a jumper by freshman Tiffany Douglas.
Four CMU players were in twin figures. Following Manning were senior Laurie Henderson and sophomore Lindy Hatfield with 13 each, and senior Desi Eidson with 12.
Canisius countered with just one player in double digits, junior Janel Stevens with a game-high 22. She also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds as the visitors held a 45-44 edge in caroms.
After shooting a poor 29.7 percent in the first half, the Chippewas made field goals at a 51.6 percent clip in the final half. CMU was 39.7 percent for the game compared to 35.8 percent for Canisius.
CMU is idle until a Wednesday, January 8, game at Eastern Michigan University to open Mid-American Conference play. Game time is 7 p.m.
