LAST WEEKEND ? It seems that it was a smooth transition from the indoor to the outdoor season for the Central Michigan women's track team. Still hot from their championship performance at the conference indoor championships, the Chippewas easily took the title at the Saluki Spring Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Central Michigan won the women's team-title (172), followed by Kansas (115), Missouri (99.5), Northern Iowa (60), Southern Illinois (57), Indiana State (36), Missouri-Kansas City (26) and Eastern Illinois (18).
The Chippewas claimed five firsts. Kia Johnson (East Amherst, N.Y/Jr.) took first in the 100m (12.17) and 200m (24.53) events. Kari Karhoff (Durand/Sr.) took the 400m hurdle title with a time of 1:01.53 and Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Sr.) won the long jump competition with a leap of 19-6 . The 400m relay team turned in a first-place performance as well with a time of 46.5.
Other standout performances include two fourth-place showings by Fallon Bailey (Fremont, Ohio/Fr.). She was fourth in the 100m (12.57) and in the 200m (25.83). Karhoff was second in the 400m dash (26.54), Kristen Podein (Belmont/So.) was second in the 1500m run with a time of 4:56.54, Danielle Quisenberry (Middleville/So.) was second in the 5000m with a time of 18:00.98, Amber Bright (Lake Ann/Jr.) had a time of 1:02.73 in the 400m hurdles which was good enough for third, Jackie Bozin ( Washington/So.) was second in the high jump with a mark of 5-7 and Melissa Brousseau (Alpena/Sr.) was second in the shot put (47-6 ) and fourth in discus (145-4).
WINNING UGLY ? ?It was our first outdoor meet of the season and I think that it showed," said Raske of the Saluki Spring Classic. "We were a little rough around the edges. We dominated the meet but I thought that we won ugly and we still have some cob webs to knock off. Some athletes that I thought were going to win didn't, but it was a nice gut check for them. We need to regroup and get used to some of the events that are only run outdoors."
