MOUNT PLEASANT -- Two student-athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to join the Central Michigan women's basketball team next fall.
Head coach Eileen Kleinfelter has announced the addition of 5-9 Casey Manning (Southgate/Anderson) and 6-1 Chasidy Myers (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) to the 2002 recruiting class. They join Erin Kuhl (Rochester Hills/Rochester Adams) and Lindsey Mecoli (Clarkston/Our Lady of the Lakes) who signed to play at Central Michigan last fall.
?This recruiting class will raise Central Michigan's level of competition, especially in the Mid-American Conference,? Kleinfelter said.
Manning comes to Central via Anderson High School. She could play any position on the court but spent most of her time at the two guard.
She led her team to an 11-1 conference mark in her senior campaign. Manning paced her team with averages of 20.1 points, 11.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 5.9 steals. She is the only 1,000-point scorer at Southgate, tallying 1,363 points in her four-year career. Manning also set the standard nailing seven threes and scoring 36 points in a game. The 5-9 guard also grabbed all-state honorable mention, all-conference, all-metro and all-area West second team accolades.
As a junior, she averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and five steals to go along with three blocks. She hit on 44 percent of her shots and shot 72 percent from the charity stripe. She wrapped up her junior campaign with all-state honorable mention, all-conference, all-area West second team, all-metro honorable mention and All-Downriver Dream Team honors.
?Casey gives us good size at the guard position and has a great deal of athletic ability,? noted Kleinfelter. ?She has the tools to step out and shoot or to penetrate and create the assist. We were impressed with her quickness and leaping ability as well as her rebounding and defense. Casey's perimeter game will contribute to our program.?
Myers prepped at Columbia City High School. Her team lost in the state finals her junior year and fell one game shy of the Class 4A Final Four with a season-ending overtime loss in the regional finals. Myers played the five all season but is a versatile player who can step out and shoot the three or run the floor.
The 6-1 forward helped her team last season scoring 13.7 points per game. She was second on the team with 7.8 rebound and led her team in steals (2.1) en route to all-state honorable mention honors, as voted on by the Associated Press. She also shot 53.5 percent from the floor and swatted away 44 shots in her senior campaign. Myers polished off her senior year by grabbing first team all-conference, second team all-state, according to Hoosier State Magazine, and first team all-county recognition.
She averaged 11.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game her junior year while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor. Myers finished her junior season with second team all-conference honors.
?Chasidy will definitely contribute to our team inside,? Kleinfelter said. ?She comes from a successful program and at 6-1, she is mobile and athletic. Chasidy has good speed, good range and is not afraid of mixing it up inside. She is fundamentally sound with a solid work ethic. Her best years of basketball are ahead of her.?
Both signees were standouts off the court as well. Manning and Myers are academically-sound athletes with better than a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
