THE TEAM?The Central Michigan University women's track and field team will take part in the Eastern Michigan University Twilight meet on Friday, April 19, in Ypsilanti. The Chippewas were scheduled to compete in the Kansas Relays but opted to cancel that trip and head to EMU for academic and preparation reasons. The Eagles will host the Mid-American Conference championships.
THE COACHING STAFF?The CMU women's track and field program is led by head coach Kathleen Raske and assistant coaches Karen Lutzke and Larry Levine. Raske led the Chippewas to a MAC championship in the 2002 indoor season and won MAC "Coach of the Year" and Regional "Coach of the Year" honors. Lutzke was named MAC cross country ?Coach of the Year? after helping the squad to the 2000 MAC championship while Levine, who is in his fifth year, works with the throwers and directs CMU's strength and conditioning program for the throwing events.
LAST WEEKEND ? The Central Michigan women's track team scored 188.5 points in the Indiana Four Way on the campus of Indiana University Saturday afternoon, but fell short of Indiana's 217.5 points.
Taking first place for the Chippewas were Kari Karhoff (Durand/Sr.) in the 400 meter hurdles (1:00.31) and Suzy Bozin (Washington/Sr.), capturing her first high jump victory of the outdoor season with a leap of 5-9 3/4.
Other top performers for CMU included second-place showings by Erin Miner (Webster, N.Y./Sr.) in the 800 meter dash (2:14.33), Abby Jaroscak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Sr.) in the 100 meter hurdles (14.45), Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Sr.) in the high jump (5-4 1/4), Melissa Brousseau in the shot put (47-4 1/2) and the discus (148 1/2), the 4x100 meter relay team (46.83) and the 4x400 meter relay team (3:52.92).
The Chippewas had won their previous two scored meets, dating back to the MAC indoor championship.
GIVING 'EM A SCARE ? "We accomplished what we were trying to do," said Raske about the Indiana Four-Way. "We wanted to give Indiana a run for first and we did so right until the end. The Hoosiers are a well-balanced nationally-renowned team and we gave them a scare. We also had a lot of personal records, which is what we are looking for at this time of year."
STACKING UP ? "We had two main reasons for changing the schedule and going to Eastern Michigan," said Raske. "First, it will help our athletes out academically. They will have a one-day trip instead of three days which will allow them to study for finals. Second, we will get a chance to run on Eastern's track. It is hosting the MAC championships and we have never competed on its track since I have been here."
STANDOUT SENIORS -- At last weekend's Indiana Four-Way the Chippewas were led by a group of experienced veterans. Every Maroon and Gold jersey that took first or second place in an event was a senior. Kari Karhoff and Suzy Bozin took home victories, while Erin Miner, Melissa Brousseau, Abby Jaroscak and Maria Derezinski all finished in second place.
