Derezinski Stands Out At Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Central Michigan University heptathlete Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Sr.) finished second at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday afternoon.
Derezinski finished with 5097 points. The Muskegon native kept pace with a first-place showing in the high jump. She cleared 5-8 1/2. Derezinski also took third in the long jump (18-2 1/2). Barbara Szlendakova of Iowa State took the top honor with 5306 points. The heptathlon consists of the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.
Derezinski already provisionally qualified to compete in the heptathlon at the NCAA championship meet this year. She posted 5181 points at the Spring Invitational in Notre Dame on April 6.
The Drake Relays are a four-day event held at Drake University. More than 8,700 athletes are accepted to compete this year with 33 NCAA national champions among their ranks.
