Chippewas Pound of 12-2 Win Over Akron

AKRON, Ohio - After scoring just one run in two losses on Saturday., Central Michigan University had its hitting clothes on here Sunday in pounding out a 12-2 Mid-American Conference win over the University of Akron.
The Chippewas had 16 hits, eight of them doubles and one a homer to finish with a splikt in the series. CMU is now 16-8 for the season and 6-2 in MAC while the Zips are now 8-13 and 3-3.
Central scored first with an unearned run in the second frame. Danny Gibbons made it to second on a wild throw on an infield bouncer and then rode home on Ryan Krueger's double to right.
The Chippewas picked up another run in the third when David Latour blooped a single to left, took second on an infield out and scored on Keith Sampsell's double to the fence in left center.
CMU upped the lead to 5-0 with three runs in the fifth. The first came on back-to-back doubles by Mike Gates and Gibbons. Scott Pickens was then hit by a pitch. Gibbons came home on a single to left by Krueger and Pickens scored on a double steal.
Akron got two back in the bottom of the sixth of three straight singles, the last a two-run infield hit by Dan Swallie.
Tim Groves put the Chippewas back up by five, 7-2, with a towering two-run homer in the top of the seventh, his first of the season. Central added two more in the eighth, one unearned.
Central wrapped up the scoring with three more in the ninth, Latour singling in one, Grubb doubling in another and Sampsell singling in the final tally of the game.
Central returns to action at home on Tuesday with a non-league game against Northwood beginning at 2 p..m. The Chippewas then play at Michigan on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
