Women's Track Takes Third, Men Fifth

YPSILANTI - The Central Michigan women's track team finished in third place while the men took fifth at the Mid-American Conference championships in Ypsilanti on Saturday afternoon.
For the women, Kent State grabbed the outdoor title with 133 points. Eastern Michigan was second (128) followed by Central Michigan (112), Ball State (93), Western Michigan (67), Toledo (58), Akron (55.5), Buffalo (47), Miami (45), Bowling Green (41.5), Ohio (37) and Marshall (2).
On Saturday, the third day of competition, Suzy Bozin was the high jump champion (5-9 3/4) followed by fellow Chippewa Maria Derezinski in second (5-8).
Central had another dozen athletes put points on the board this afternoon. Following are the track team members who finished in the top eight: Natasha Reynolds took fourth in the javelin, 133-4; Kristen Podein was fifth in the 1500m, 4:34.85; Brook Creed was sixth in 1500m, 4:35.22; Abby Jaroscak grabbed eighth in the 100m, 14.45; Kari Karhoff was third in the 400m (54.96) and provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 400m hurdles, taking second (59.11); Fallon Bailey finished fifth in the 100m, 11.94; In the 800m, Podein was sixth (2:13.36) and Erin Miner was seventh (2:14.40); Jenni Roberts was sixth in the 200m, 24.63; and Creed was sixth in the 5000m, 17:20.29; and the 400m relay team grabbed second (46.47).
Recapping action from the previous two days, the Chippewas had another five athletes land in the top eight of their respective event. Derezinski took first in the heptathlon and was an NCAA provisional qualifier (5268). She also turned in a third-place leap in the long jump (19-4). Other scorers were; Amanda Storck in the pole vault (12-10 1/4); Melissa Brousseau's NCAA provisional qualifying mark and first-place effort in the shot put ( 49-5); and Karen LeRoy's seventh-place showing in the steeplechase (11:08.58).
On the men's side, Eastern Michigan was tops in the conference with 168 points. Trailing the Eagles were: Western Michigan 115; Toledo 86; Kent State 81.50; Central Michigan 81; Akron 76.50; Ball State 73; Bowling Green 38; Marshall 37; Buffalo 33; Miami 23; Ohio 3.
The top showing on Saturday for the Chippewas was a second-place effort by Mike Sidlauskas in the discus (169-8). Seven other athletes tallied points for the Maroon and Gold this afternoon. Jake Flynn was third in the 5000m, 14:39.41; Derold Sligh was fifth in the 400m, 47.18; Jake Lake was sixth in 400m hurdles, 55.05; Jeff Davis was sixth in the 5000m, 14:42.56; in the 1500m, Ron Miller took seventh, 3:58.55; Don Wilkins was eighth in the 5000m, 14:45.20; the 1600m relay took second, 3:12.32; and the 400m relay team grabbed eighth, 41:38.
Recapping scorers from the pervious two days of action, Dana Thomas was first in the decathlon (6977 points) while Steve Wolf leapt to a second-place showing in the long jump (23-8 1/4). Other finishers were: Jake Flynn, who was third in the 10,000m (30:16.12); Don Wilkins, who took fifth in the 10,000m (30:34.86); Davis, who took sixth in the steeplechase (9:08.76); and Dave Ernsberger, who finished seventh in 10,000m (30:39.72).
