MOUNT PLEASANT -- Almost every sport at Central Michigan has closed the books on the 2001-02 season. The final two Chippewa athletes to see action this season will compete for the women's track team this week.
Suzy Bozin (Washington/Sr.) and Maria Derezinski (Muskegon/Sr.) are competing in the high jump and heptathlon, respectively, at the NCAA track and field championships on May 29-June 1. The event is hosted on the campus of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.
Bozin leapt in to the championships with a 5-11 effort in the high jump at the Central Collegiates on May 3. The senior is no stranger to this kind of competition as she garnered indoor All-American honors in the high jump earlier this season. Bozin enters the high jump ranked 16th. She has been to the outdoor championships once before (2001) and has been to the indoor championships on two other occasions (2001 and 1999).
Derezinski is coming off a stellar outdoor season. She has been one of the top athletes for CMU, claiming second in the heptathlon at the prestigious Drake Relays and then claiming the MAC heptathlon title, besting her provisional-qualifying mark at the MAC championships (5,268 points). The Muskegon native enters the event ranked 18th. Derezinski provisionally qualified for the heptathlon last season but did no make the cut. This is her first appearance at the NCAA championships.
