Field Hockey Opens Season 2-0

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Central Michigan University field hockey team improved to 2-0 with a 6-2 victory over Lock Haven University on Sunday afternoon.
The Chippewas had three players score two goals each, including Kristy Reed (South Wales, N.Y./So.) who tickled the twine just 3:20 into the game. She also scored the second goal 9:44 into the first half.
Meg Lewis (Pittsford, N.Y./Sr.) and Jocelyn Gates (Lake Villa, Ill./Sr.) each added two goals for CMU to round out the scoring.
The Chippewas were out shot by the Lady Eagles, 20-19, but were held in the game by outstanding goaltending from Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Sr.). Spero made seven saves in 62:35 minutes of action.
Central Michigan University opened the season 2-0 for the first time in 13 years, when the 1989 squad did so en route to a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference.
The Chippewas open up the home portion of their schedule against the University of Pacific on Thursday, September 5, at 2 p.m., inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
