Field Hockey Improves To 3-0

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University field hockey team shutout the University of Pacific, 4-0, in its first game in front of the home crowd at Kelly/Shorts Stadium this year, on Thursday afternoon.
The Chippewas' Jocelyn Gates (Lake Villa, Ill./Sr.) notched her second goal of the season to get CMU on the board in the first half with 11:47 remaining. .
In the second half, the Chippewa offense started to cruise, scoring three goals on nine shots. Maria Neiswender (Hummelstown, Pa./Sr.) scored her first goal since the 2000 season on a pass from Jeanette Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Sr.) For the second-straight game, Meg Lewis (Pittsford, N.Y./Sr.) netted two goals. .
Despite the Chippewas offensive charge the defense stole the show, allowing only one shot on goal. .
CMU goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Sr.) recorded her second shutout in three games this season. She now has nine for her career which places her tied for fourth on the Chippewa career shutout list. .
Central Michigan University head coach Cristy Freese moved into a tie for first with Mary Bottaro for all-time wins by a CMU coach with 119. .
The Chippewas return to action when they travel to Ann Arbor to take on the defending national champions, Michigan, at10 a.m., on Saturday, September 7.
